So I'm curious for those of you who may have done the transatlantic. How rough are the seas in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean? I would assume they can get pretty rough.

It varies by year and route. We did the WBTA in 2014 and they were largely very smooth. That was a southern crossing.

As already noted, it can vary. We did a WBTA in 2010. In September (typically a "rougher" seas time), and the ocean was like glass every day. The worst day we had was when we crossed out of the Mediterranean proper into the Atlantic. But, other than that, gorgeous, sunny cruising.

Last year's EBTA was smooth until we were sailing between Oslo and Copenhagen. The middle of the Atlantic was very nice :)

This may be an odd question, but did you or anyone you know "freak out" a bit knowing you in the middle of the Atlantic with no land anywhere in sight?

As previously noted, the seas, swells vary all the time. The seas and swells could be glass smooth for 2 days and then heavy seas and swells the next 2.

Freaking out becuase you are away from land is really somthing you should not worry about, it is no more dangerous then being near by land.

If you are a the type of person that this could be a problem, I would suggest talking to you family Doctor for something that will keep you calm.

I was on the westbound 2007 transatlantic cruise it was smooth but the people on the east bound had it rough. Mostly just luck you could have it bad or good.

We were on WBTA in 2015. It was mostly calm but we sailed around a small storm.

We had much rougher weather on a repo cruise from San Diego to Vancouver on another line - 20 foot swells and about 1/3 of the passengers sea sick. Luckily, not us!

Noone I knew freaked out about that. Maybe people freak out before they book and don't go on a transatlantic to begin with :)

Been on 2 WBTAs, in 2011 and 2014 and the weather and sailing were great. As previously posted, when leaving the Med and heading into the Atlantic the seas are a little choppy...kind of like the first night out of Florida on a carribbean cruise.

Personal, I LOVE looking at the ship map and seeing that we are out in the middle of nowhere with no land for days!

If this is something that would bother you I wouldnt do it. I certainly wouldnt resort to meds to get you through it as one poster suggested.

Was on the EBTA in 2013, there were days at sea where the Atlantic looked like a mirror.. No waves what so ever.. One of the best sunsets I've ever seen was on one of those nights. It was weird to me to think about being basically in the middle of nowhere.. During the day, no other ships in sight and no contrails from airplanes.. At night, no lights from ships anywhere to be seen, and no lights from planes in the sky.. Heck really didn't even see any satellites at night.. Very peaceful though..

I've done 5 TAs and only the 2007 one was really bad. To be honest I was lucky as just felt drunk every day from the motion rather than sea sick. I find the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere with no land strangely comforting but I'm odd. Its like finally getting away from everything and knowing no one can reach you! Great feeling!

We have done three transatlantic cruises with the fourth coming up in May. Out of all these cruises we only had one day where the seas could be considered really rough. That occurred between Madeira and Gibraltar. Most of the days were really smooth sailing.

I've done the WBTA cruise twice (2010 & 2014) and the weather was perfect with no rough seas. When the captain did notice a storm approaching he said we would take a slight detour to avoid it and we did. I look forward to doing another transatlantic cruise.

We did the WBTA in 2014 and the sea was so calm. It was our first ever cruise so I didn't really know what to expect & lots of people had warned us we'd get sea sick however, we barely noticed the movement at all.
The being in the middle of nowhere was really relaxing. The first holiday ipwhere I've properly chilled out ever!! We are hoping to do the westbound again next year.

That is funny, we were on the same 2010 WBTA and I was going to comment on how the seas were like a glass, and so very smooth....we loved that trip.

As to roughness, it depends on how many icebergs there are that year.

Not "freaking out," but I sometimes think about that issue, just on the Caribbean cruises. Depending on the itinerary, there will be times where you can look out at the horizon from the ship in all directions, and see nothing but calm water: no land, no other ships, no oil rigs, nothing. Then, you look at the map on the TV to get a bearing on where you actually are, see that you're still relatively close to things in the Caribbean, and realize just how massive the oceans really are.

someone told me they saw a barracuda in Serenity bay. i promptly got out of the water.
