Trampolines - my DD just got hurt

I'm not posting to lecture anyone. I'm posting to remind everyone again now that spring is here, you're going to hear more and more about kids getting hurt, sometimes seriously.

My DD knows how I feel about trampolines, she's not allowed to jump on the them. Our neighbor has a huge one and my DD and neighbor usually just play/talk on it because she knows she cannot get physical on it = period.

The short of it is is that she went to drop herself to her knees after jumping up and when she landed on the trampoline, she somehow arched her back backwards and pulled some muscles in her back. I've already contacted her ped.nurse about it and we both feel confident enough to ice her since she can walk, sit, etc...but bending over is very uncomfortable for her. I'll be observing her all night and for the next few days to make sure she didn't do any more damage. I thank god she didn't land on the ground or had someone fall on her. I felt I could trust her to not fool around, but kids will be kids. She was reluctant to tell me and I had to really pry it out of her what had happened.

I know that people have had far more serious injuries on these, they are just so dangerous, they are accidents waiting to happen.

Just a gentle reminder to all you moms and dads out there (inspired by the "treadmill warning") I hope you're little guy is doing much better today.

Thanks for listening.

I sympathize--last year my DS (5) whacked his leg on the outer circle of our friend's trampoline--would not straighten his leg for 3 days (even for xrays) and would not walk for 10. Obviously it wasn't broken although that's what he calls it. He is only allowed now on our neighbor's trampoline (they have safety net inside the outer circle) with me there and only 1 other child at a time. It is exactly why I never let DH buy one. He doesn't nag me about it anymore! Try carrying around a 5 year old for 10 days!

Also, in case many didn't know.....a lot of insurance companies won't insure a homeowner with a trampoline.

A nice alternative to a trampoline is one of those Bounce 'round houses they are selling in the stores now. They run about the same price and aren't quite as "bouncy" :)

Has anyone heard of an insurance agent driving past a house with a trampoline and threatening to cancel the homeowner's insurance policy? I heard this story, but it was a friend of a friend thing.

:( - I'm sorry she's hurting. I hope she feels better soon.

Well, on another board I frequent, many were asked if they have a trampoline when they were getting home owners insurance, so I suppose you could lie and say you didn't so they would insure you.

everytime any of my kids have gotten on a trampoline (somewhere else...I won't get one!) they have always gotten hurt. I know their fun and all but too risky for me. :teeth:

I hope she has a quick recovery!!

I got a trampoline when I was 5 years old and had it until I was 14 years old. We were never denied insurance because of it. I've never even heard of that. I got hurt on it numerous times. None of my injuries were any worse than anything I would get as an athlete or dancer. Of course, I was a very active child...always outside...riding bikes, riding my horses.

Those things are dangerous. I wanted to buy one for the kids and my husband thought I was nuts for even suggesting it. ;)

My neighbors had a trampoline for a few months after they moved in their house. They didn't declare it to the insurance company when they started their policy. They received a letter from the insurance company telling them to get rid of it or their policy would be cancelled. I have no idea how the insurance company found out about the trampoline.

I hope your DD is not seriously injured and that she heals quickly.:sunny:

Insurance companies are becoming very picky now - even to the point of refusing you insurance - or refusing to renew your insurance - based on what kind of dog you own..

I would not be the least bit surprised if trampolines are on the "hit list" now too.. As for just lying and saying you don't have one, they'll simply refuse to cover the claim if someone is injured..

To the OP - hope your little one is feeling better real soon!

Sorry, I didn't see your post. I guess that's what happened to my neighbor (see story above). That must be how their insurance company found out about their trampoline. BTW, they did get rid of the trampoline. They tried to sell it at a garage sale, but no one bought it. They ended up donating it to charity.

We sold ours after the next door neighbor broke her arm. They didn't sue and I didn't want to push our luck. It was fun to have when the kids were little and I could stand next to it, but the older they got the more dangerous it became.

My younger DS broke his elbow playing on one when he was a sophomore in HS - that ended his JV Baseball season!

Hope your DD is OK.

When my SIL/BIL bought their new house, their insurance guy asked if they had a trampoline and when told "yes", he told them to tell him they were putting a fence around it or they would simply deny them coverage.

My BIL said, "How about if I tell you that my yard has no place for a trampoline?" (Their yard is completely on sloped land. Gotta love the hills of TN!) When the ins. guy got this info, he went ahead with the policy.

I HATE trampolines...my BIL got one for his 2 DS's who are animals anyway...my DD's couldnt figure out why I was such a mean mom and not them get on it...that is until my neice jumped and landed wrong and broke her leg...then DD's thought I was great...that only lasted for a little bit though.

My insurance agent asks about trampolines, but since she lives in my neighborhood, she knows we dont have one....

I do know one profession who 'love' them.... my chiropractor LOL....he said since trampolines have become so popular, his practice with younger kids has increased....of course, our DD's are adjusted weekly and have been since birth, but he's got an increase with kids during the summer..

Most insurance companies in NY will not write your insurance if you have a trampoline. If you lie and say you dont have one, that is fraud and they can deny your claim. Also, if you get one after the policy is written, they can cancel your policy on renewal. Also, a new problem is diving boards on swimming pools. They are now starting to cancel policies with them. As a previous poster said, certain dogs are a problem.

Lorix2, I'm glad that your DD is O.K. There must be a special class in heaven that all children attend entitled, "How to take years off of your parents' lives". Thank You for asking about my son (treadmill boy), he is doing much better, ready for more mischief. Thanks for the trampoline warning.

Wow, I never knew about the insurance thing or how many kids get injured on those things. I was just about to go buy my kids one this weekend, but now I really am going to have to think about it a little bit longer before I decide. Thanks for the info.

Maybe you could get one of those "Jump-O-Lenes" instead - where they're contained inside of it.. Far less chance of injury that way..;) Do a search on eBay and you can see what some of them look like..
