Trampoline owners a Question

ALL trampoline owners PLEASE report to the BAD PARENTS thread at once...

roflmao patty, we don't have one but dd has certainly played on one... hmmm, guess I should just lock her in her room so she can't play on anything or do anything that might be considered unsafe by anyone... oh but wait, I'm the parent and can make my own decisions regarding my child's activities... she probaby shouldn't irish dance either. Going to the bad parent thread now.... maggie

The statistics you posted stated...Since 1990, the CPSC has received reports of six deaths involving trampolines. Six deaths in 9 years. 900 people die every year on bicycles.

We don't have a trampoline and really have no intention of buying one so I have no personal interest in this but those statistics don't seem staggering to me. Am I missing something?

As with ANYTHING, parental supervision and common sense comes into play. Putting a trampoline right next to a stone flower bed isn't smart. Allowing 3 kids to jump at once isn't smart. Placing the trampoline in an appropriate spot with a barrier and setting up a strict set of rules for the kids to follow combined with appropriate parental supervision takes much of the danger out of trampolines.

We had in-laws who had a trampoline and they kept it up all year. But then they didn't have to deal with snow which I imagine would put too much weight on it. They lived along the coast and their biggest concern was wind whenever a storm came up. But it never blew away!

It finally wore out over time from being exposed to the elements but it took many years.

Deb is an academic pediatrician at a major health center. She saw an opportunity to alert parents who have trampolines as to their dangers. Children's health and safety are paramount to her and she just seized the chance to inform parents who might not know about the hazards of trampolines. She should be thanked instead of vilified.

I am a certified electrician with many OSHA classes under my belt. The base of a trampoline is very often made of metal. Remember when storing a trampoline, don't lean them against an electrical outlet, or against any live wires as this may lead to electrocution. Safety first.

We had a trampoline, for about two days, and then wind in our area blew it and it got twisted. After that I didn't want to keep it anymore. So, we bought one of those small jumping castles (suitable for 6 or less children), which actually cost us less than the trampoline did. We like it better because it is enclosed on the sides, we can fold it down and store it, it isn't outside all the time and exposed to the weather and....we can transport it easily. We have taken it to my mom's in the past so all the kids could jump. It has worked out well for us. :Pinkbounc

You ROCK Duck

What Hydster said is right. Just leave the metal frame there and take off and store everything else.

We got a trampoline when I was about 4 years old. Me, my sister and every kid on the block jumped that thing day and night - and we all made it out intact. It's very sad when any child gets hurt, but I don't believe in living in a bubble.

when i was younger, we had one that stayed up all of the time...we flipped it over when we went on vacation, but that was just so that the neighbors didnt come over

I Cover My Trampoline when not in use and leave it up all year. It has a pea gravel border around it about 3 feet out It is now 10 Years Old and Still has bounce, had to replace the pad a couple of years ago.

My Kids rode Bikes
My Kids Rode Skateboards
My Kids Rode Scooters
My Kids Rode Gopeds
My Kids Played Contact Sports
My Kids Broke Arms and Legs
My Kids are Ok. They had fun and enjoyed their Childhood.

We don't have one but our neighbor who is like grandma bought one for the grandkids. (which means our kids use it all the time!) We supervise them have strict rules and it has a net. It one doesn't have a net I will admit my kids are not allowed on them. That to me is just too risky.

But they love to jump and jump and jump! Good fun and exercise.
Oh and not to totally stay off topic, she leaves it out all winter, we get snow but it melts fairly quickly or the kids push it off.

Deb I respect your information and opinion. But as so many have said kids can get hurt in so many ways. YOur story is sad and tragic, one that could have been prevented. SOunded like no fence and then put next to a rock wall....But kids get hurt all the time. I broke my arm as a kid on the monkey bars. Both bones....do I now not let my kids on the monkey bars? Of course not I let them climb all the time.

I haven't ever heard of jumping castles. That sounds interesting.

As for childhood injuries, I was always climbing trees when I was a kid. I used to go as high as possible and it was a wonder that I never broke something.

We take ours apart and put the mat in the basement and the rest of the frame goes in the shed.

On my way... :moped: Not only do I own a trampoline, but when my DS was a baby he rode in a walker, slept on his belly, and had a bottle at bedtime. Guess I'm lucky CPS never came calling....
