Training schedule question

No, I don't think I'm done quite yet.

Was looking at the half marathon walk training schedule in MfM and have a question.

Need to adjust days so it lines up a bit better for a Saturday event versus Sunday on the schedule (rest days versus walks). Problem is if I just shift it back one day it puts distance on Friday which just isn't feasible. I thought it would make more sense to do long runs in training on the same day you'd be doing the 10K, 13K, etc.

Do you generally do distance in training on the same day as most of your events? Does it really make much difference?

Thanks!

I've used MfM's training plans for the marathon in 07 and for goofy last year.

I'd say do the plan as scheduled in the book and only modify the week leading up to the event. You taper a bit before the race, so the actual day won't be as important. That way there is less to modify (6 days instead of 20 weeks :) )

Use teh saem schedule. the week of teh race, do you 20 min on Friday instead of XT if you want and consider your race your LR. Changing the week of teh race will not make a big difference. It's set up fo SUnday races, just because most halves adn fulls are on SUnday. We've done a half on Saturday adn just skipped teh XT. HTH!

Have used it just the way it is for a race on Saturday. I like to think of a training schedule as more of a guide. I know from personal experience that if you don't train exactly as prescribed in the schedule, you can still do the race and do it just fine. I heard once if you can follow 80% of the training schedule, you shouldn't have any problem on race day.

Thanks everyone! Does make more sense to just modify the last week. One of those "duh" moments on my part. :rolleyes1

It's a book titled Marathoning for Mortals.
I had started with the on line one by Higdon but am finding I like this schedule much better. Plus the book is full of good info, fun tips, hints and inspiration.
