I want to start off slow and work my way up to running a 5k. I would like to first get comfortable with 1 mile. Anybody have a training plan for this? I am currently running 1 lap on the treadmill and walking one lap , twice to get to 1 mile. Thanks!

I swear by the Couch to 5K running plan! There is a post on WISH here all about it! Check it out!

I don't know of any specific plans for one mile, but it sounds like you are on the right track! :cheer2: As you feel more comfortable/confident, you can increase your running time.

I second the C25K program! I only thought I'd run if somebody/thing was chasing me, but C25K makes it easy.

With the coaching of a friend I ran 1 mile today without stopping on 4.5 mph! So exciting!:cool1:

Isn't it the greatest feeling ever?!! When I started running in August, I was gasping for air at 1/4 mile. I, too, used the C25K trainer app and followed it. Since that day, I have built up my endurance and I have run as far as 6 1/4 miles without stopping:cool1:. I've run (2) 5K's (with 8 more on the agenda for this year) and I am hoping to participate in the F&W 1/2 Marathon in November. I had *NEVER* run before August so I feel like an example of what can happen if you put your mind to it and keep going. Even a short and slow run is better than not going out at all:flower3:.

Just remember that road running and treadmill running are two different beasts.

But congrats on the mile! You will get there. My long days are up to 8 miles currently. I still can't believe that I am running that much just over an hour

Congrats to all of you who had started running! The hardest part is running that first mile. In the begining I also could not run an entire mile without stopping and now I can run an entire 5K distance without stopping.

I would suggest using the Jef Galloway method. Jeff is the official trainer for the Run Disney events and he suggests a Walk-Run-Walk-Run method. This may mean walking 2 minutes then running 1 minute walking two minutes, running 1 minute. Or vice verse, Run 2 min, walk 1 min, Run 2 min, etc. As you are just starting out, you can make the time anything you'd like.

Good luck!
