Train Issue

[A whole new world]

Hi,

I was wondering if you guys could help me. I have a very heavy, detailed train on my wedding dress. My dress is white with dark red down the back and train - Alfred Angelo dress 1516 (i'm not sure how to post pictures).

I want to hook the train up for my 'at home' reception, so that i can dance. Does anyone know from experience the best way to bustle it up? I've seen several examples some are folded back up and tied to the waist. Some are tucked underneath. I'm not too keen having it round my wrist as i have weak wrists and its heavy.

If i do have it tucked underneath is it tied with say laces, ribbon or buttons and will they hold a heavy train.

Try this one, it even has one with your dress. That dress was a close second to the one I am wearing which is why I did some research on it.

There are a TON of different bustle styles - you kinda have to try them and see which looks best with your train, especially since you have the red down the back.

I have heard more stories of ribbon bustles being broken than buttoned bustles. Mine was held up by loops attached to four buttons, but you may need many more attachment points. Usually you are charge by the point, and the more points you have, the sturdier it will be!

I like the last picture the pick-up ballroom style is really pretty, but i worry about adding hooks and buttons to the outside of the dress, and how easy it would be for my sister to hook it up for me. Shes 16.

You don't happen to have seen dresses up close that have hooks and buttons on the outside and how noticable they are when the trains down do you?

Toni thanks for the picture. That looks like a fairly easy bustle to do. I've found a semstress so hopefully if i show her these pictures she'll be able to work something out.

I created a diagram that showed how to hook up my bustle and gave it to anyone I thought might be helping me. I'm sure if you practiced with your sister, she'd pick it up quickly!

Also, a good seamstress should be able to make the attachments so they aren't really noticeable when the train's down...

I ended up with metal hooks so they could be color coded
they were all sewed into the back side of the material so you couldnt tell when it was down

here is a pic of it up

it think the ribbons are easiest to tie up
just match ribbon 1 with ribbon 1 and so on and so on

the single loop is the easiest to break as its a lot of weight in one spot

all options do have the chance to break so pack safety pins and some thread just in case

I had to bustle my cousins wedding gown. She had hooks put in and you couldn't see them the way the train was folded. The folds went over the hooks and hid them.

I think maybe i will use Wendy's idea of the hooks on the bottom side of the train and hook them up and under. The ribbon i think will be too weak for my dress.
