Traffic alert: LAX this weekend

"near one of the main entrances to Los Angeles International Airport"

There is more than one Main entrance. Allow for extra time. Follow the detour signs for the detour route shown in the article. Take a shuttle instead of driving. Wouldn't concern me. But we allow for extra time as often as possible!

Your rental car company has a shuttle that picks you up at the terminals and then takes you off-site to get your rental. Once you get your rental car, just be sure to ask directions on how to get out and onto the freeway. I would definitely allow for more time than you have anticipated.

Have a fun trip!

Since it's leaving the airport vs having to catch an outbound flight I would not sweat it. As mentioned, I would have the rental car place give you a map and highlight the route they recommend taking.

I don't like depending on GPS, so I always stop at AAA to get a nice, free, detailed map of the area I will be driving around in. If you don't have a AAA membership you can still purchase maps at any AAA office for a nominal fee.

Which rental car company are you using? Are you bypassing the check out line (like Avis preferred) and not seeing an agent? Perhaps a local could draw up a route out for you.

The Avis rental center is on Airport Blvd between Century and Manchester. They said they were using Manchester as a re-route. So, I think you'll be fine. It'll take a bit for the shuttle from the airport to get to the rental center, but other than that and traffic being heavier, it looks like you won't have to take any crazy detours. Just take Manchester east to the 405S. From there, you can decide which route to take.
