Traditional reservations versus renting DVC points

Not sure if this belongs here or on one of the DVC boards (am posting here, in part, because this board presumably gets more traffic).

Until recently, I never gave much thought into renting DVC points because: (A) renting points seemed mysterious and risky; and (B) since we go in the off-season, I figured we could always get good enough discounts.

However, within the past year, Disney has appeared to drastically cut back room discounts (while continually raising prices).

So I've recently started to seriously explore the idea of renting DVC points.

From what I've been able to gather so far, the following are pros and cons of renting DVC points versus a traditional reservation at a deluxe resort.

Pros of renting DVC:

1. Signficantly less expensive for the same room/villa type (especially given Disney's recent trend toward cutting room discounts).

2. Along the lines of being less expensive, can get ammenities such as in-room washer/dryer and kitchen for less than a standard, traditionally reserved room lacking those features (and even if you're in a studio, don't have to pay to use the on-site laundry facilities).

3. Further along the lines of being less expensive, if your party has more than 5 people, can get a two bedroom villa (that includes the above-referenced amenities) for less than two standard, traditionally reserved rooms.

4. Still have access to most of the benefits afforded to all on-site guests, including Magical Express, Disney transportation, free parking, EMH, and even the dining plans.

5. Don't have to buy tickets or have an AP to get a dining plan (and/or can do a split-stay with a dining plan at each leg without having to buy an AP or 1-day ticket(s) on the second leg).

6. Can save a lot on food by cooking/eating in your villa.

Cons of renting DVC:

1. You must have firm plans up to 11 months in advance (especially for the best locations, such as BLT).

2. Along the lines of the above, you usually must pay the entire cost of the reservation up-front, which is non-refundable.

3. If you rent direct (as opposed to going through a reliable broker), you run the risk of being taken.

4. If you want a dining plan, you're required to give your cc# to the DVC owner.

5. Limited counter service food options.

6. Won't get your room cleaned (and towels, etc. replaced) every day.

7. No club level (I'm not into club level, so not sure if this is true or not).

8. Are not eligible for free dining (but presumably your room savings easily make up for this).

In the balance, it seems to me that if you're set on staying deluxe, are able to make firm plans up to 11 months in advance, have the money to pay up-front, and go through a reliable broker (or have the risk tolerance to rent direct), renting DVC is the way to go (even if you never use any of the villa kitchen amenities).

As far as I can tell, the biggest downside is the risk that you'd have to cancel your trip for some unexpected reason (but I'd assume that most of this risk can be mitigated by having sufficienty comprehensive vacation insurance).

What are other pros and cons? (Am I missing something?)

You have no control over your reservation if you are a renter - Disney will not talk to you - only the owner of the points you rented. The biggest con for me when we rented points (before buying our own) was that even though I had a reservation confirmation in my hand, I was always so nervous that we would arrive at the resort to find that our room had been cancelled by the owner of the points. That never happened, but it was always in the back of my mind that it could happen.

Another con is if you need to change the dates of your vacation - DVC resorts book up very quickly, so changing vacation dates can be tricky.

We are renting points for our very first family trip to WDW, so take my opinion with the grain of salt that I haven't yet finished the experience. I think the biggest con is not being able to cancel the reservation, but with savings over the rack rate in the neighborhood of 40-50% ($1989 vs. $4650), I decided the risk was worth it. I don't think travel insurance would cover cancellation due to reasons like work schedules, etc., so be sure to check the fine print of your policy before purchasing. Because we will be travelling with two preschoolers, we were only interested in staying in a villa. I do not feel like I'm on a vacation if I'm sharing a little room with the kids, and I really prefer having breakfast in the room. I don't think I would have been willing to pay the rack rate for the villa. But I may end up just paying for a little extra housekeeping. I'm not too worried about the reservation not being there when we arrive - it shows up in the DIsney system when I log on. We went through a points broker, and in the contract you sign, there is an indemnity if the DVC owner fails to properly secure (and keep) the reservation.

Con #4 - you don't have to give your CC # to the owner. Find out how much the DDP will be, buy a gift card for that amount - pay with that.

Con #5 - compared to what? There are CS locations at the deluxes that have them - and DVC is part of those resorts (e.g., Wilderness Lodge, Beach Club, Animal Kingdom Lodge, Bay Lake Tower - you get what I mean). So, compared to a value food court or moderate food court, all deluxes have less options. It's not DVC related.

SSR has a nice CS location I think as well. The only one I've been disappointed in was OKW, and a little bit at Kidani since you had to walk to Jambo, but that's easily solvable by staying @ Jambo.

There are very reputable members who rent out their points and don't use a broker. Don't discount all individual members who do this. Plus even the broker can't guarantee the member won't run with what they have been paid already. A contract is just a piece of paper, but DVC will require anyone renting a reservation to have a contract to state all the facts.

You can get your room cleaned as much as you want, but you'll pay extra for that. If you stay seven nights or less, you get your towels replaced and trash removed on day four with day one as check in day. If you stay eight nights or more, you will get a full cleaning on day four and trash and towel service on day eight. You can pay for extra trash and towel service or extra full cleaning if you want those.

You can pay for extra towels if you want them, too, because DVC members don't get extra towels just by asking for them. A towel pack cost $6 and you get four bath towels, two hand towels and four face cloths until the next service day. Then you have to order another towel pack.

Extra soap, shampoo, etc, all cost members extra, too. DVC members only get what they are entitled to and that's not extra freebies.

AKV has five two bedroom concierge level lockoffs at Jambo House on the sixth floor (which is where the Concierge Lounge is located). Three are savanna view, two are pool view. They go very quickly at 11 months out when DVC opens for reservations for the day. Plus since members can book up to seven nights at at time, they may all be gone the day before you want to book them. And if someone books all the studios, then there are no two bedrooms left, only one bedroom villas.

firm plans are not needed at 11 months expect for BLT and BCV. you include bwv for the food/wine festavial and Dec.

otherwise you can generally get close (not exactly) more of the time.

the only time you can't for most of DVC is Dec - very popular!

now if you are willing to take SSR or OKW - vs BWV, VWL, or AKV - then you will generally get what you want. Now this does not include Dec, most holidays and special events.

plus some members don't ask for the whole price at once. Some only want half now and half any time from 90 to 60 days before you arrive. just depends upon the member. they can be flexible too.

the thing you would to watch for - are how many posts does the person have on the Dis. the more posts - the more connected they are to the Dis the better for you.

Thanks so much for the great pro/con list. I loooove lists. :)

An additional question: Can you get a KTTW card, or are you carrying a room key, credit card, and tickets all separately?

DVC resorts are Disney resorts, and they operate the same way non-DVC resorts do. You'll get a KTTW card, and can have your tickets on it, and can have the same charging privileges as all other resort guests. You'll be on the same buses, have EMH access, get free parking at the theme parks, and you'll be able to use DME.

The only difference you'll notice when you're staying on points is that housekeeping will be in your room less frequently (unless you pay for additional cleaning services). Otherwise, it's just like any other Disney resort stay.

There is another option for paying for the dining plan.

The renter can pay the DVC member with a check, money order, paypal, etc, and the DVC member then contact member services and pay for the dining plan using their own credit card.

I am a DVC member and have done this a few times now with no issues.

We are not a big fan of all studios (except OKW) and most 1 bdrs only having 1 bed.

Following up on the "pros", it says that point renters can use the Disney Magical Express for transportation to/from the airport. How does that work? Do you just call the airlines, or do you have to get the DVC Owner to add that to the reservation, or what?

Thanks

The DVC owner will need to add it to your reservation for you. You just need to provide them with your flight information.

Thank you for the quick responses. Everyone on this board is always SOOO helpful!

I am renting points for the first time this trip and didn't use a broker. So far, the renter has been awesome! She got me exactly what I wanted and has been very quick to respond to any of my questions.

I think it just depends on the person. I am wanting to try out BCV and AKV this time and could never have afforded it or even just the deluxe version of it. The price was 1500 for 9 nights. Unheard of!

I will have to let you know when we get back how it goes. I am really looking forward to it and it may even lead to me wanting to own DVC down the road.

The DVC member does not have to add you to Magical Express. You can do it yourself. All you need is your resort confirmation number. ME doesn't care how you booked your stay as long as you are staying at a Disney resort.

If I was looking to rent 48 points to use at GCV, not sure if it's best to go through a broker or not, If I wanted to go direct how would I do that? Does anyone know anyone renting for close to end of the year? Thanks for any help

The end of this year? VGC is incredibly small and will often be completely booked at seven months out or earlier. If you're looking to book for the end of this year, you're likely out of luck. I would look into a normal resort reservation.
