Trading out question and renting points?

Just wondering what y'all would think....I'm trying to help my little brother and soon to be SIL plan their honeymoon vacation. $$ seems as though it may be tight, still waiting to hear back on an exact budget they'll have to work with (they're in N.J. and I'm in FL) so since I'm home with the kids and they both work, I'm kind of doing the research for them:teeth: What they'd like to do is spend a week in the FL Keys somewhere and then take another 3 days or so to spend with me and dh and the kids in WDW at the BWV's. The WDW part is covered, I'm just going to book for us all with our DVC points. As for the week in the keys though, that's what I'm trying to look into for them. So I was thinking, maybe it might be less expensive to rent points for a trade out to the keys from another member who has more points than we do. Now, I've never traded out before so I could be way off and for all I know it may be much more expensive to go the renting points route but....that's why I have you guys to turn to:teeth: The only thing I know about trading out is that there would be some kind of transaction fee ~ $75 if I'm not mistaken. And that they try to put you in accomadations comparable.

What do y'all think? Would it be worth it to pursue renting points or should I just scrap that whole idea? And has anyone traded to the Keys? Would love to hear details (even if it's not worth it to pursue the renting points route). Where, when, points spent??

TIA for any and all advice:wave:

Can't help much, but maybe this will get you started.

The fee for exchanges via II is $95.

I would go slowly with the "renting points for exchanging" idea if for no other reason than the cancelation/change policy. Of course, we all hope nothing would happen to change or cancel the trip, but if it does, you may just lose all of the points. Be very sure you understand the options before proceeding.

Another thing to consider is the length of time you have to make a match (if you go through DVC & II). If their wedding is less than a year or so away, you may have trouble finding something "worth it". Maybe you could join TUG and look for someone who owns in the Keys that might be willing to do a direct exchange.

I'm sure others will have more thoughts.

Best wishes -

go post on the rental/trade board - now -

also start looking here
www.skyauction.com

click on usa/canada
click on Florida (to the right)
click on hotels (again to the right bottom)

sometimes a key west timeshare appears here - they are frequent at all. So if you find one in your time - go for it!!! -

also look on the getaways - are you a member of II or RCI?

DVC is a corporate member of II - so DVC doesn't count.

Thanks for the tips from both of you;)

They're getting married in May of 2006 so I have plenty of time to research this all. I only own DVC myself and they do not own any kind of timeshare. As for if they do go the renting points route, it would be them renting and I'd just research the where when and how's and hook them up so I wouldn't have to worry about transferring points or anything.

Just trying to look at all options at all angles. spiceycat -- thank you very much for the links! I'll check them out.

If anyone else has any advice or info. I'm all ears :teeth:

The fee for II is still $75 to trade out. If you're looking to rent points to trade out, that makes no sense what so ever. Just find something for a rental. You'll have more choices at a better price with more control and flexibility. It should be fairly cheap for late Spring until just before Xmas and high the rest of the time.

Just seconding Dean's advice here. The point cost for a trade through II is very high. I can't imagine ever renting DVC points to do a trade through II.

There are lots of place to look for direct rentals, including www.redweek.com and www.myresortnetwork.com www.tug2.net has tons of advice on renting, and also has some rental classified ads.

The only exception would be for a handful of top resorts at peak time when you already had the exchange on the hook. Even then, too much to coordinate and not much time to do it in.
