"Trading down" a ticket?

I've read a lot of discussion on applying unused tickets toward the purchase of an upgraded ticket but I have not seen any discussion on my stuation so I hope someone can help.

From our last trip to Disney, I ended up with an extra Annual Pass voucher. I forgot my son's voucher at home and had to buy another. (Talk about a budget buster...) At the time I wasn't worried because I just figured we'd use the voucher on our next trip. Because of a change in jobs, we won't be able to make multiple trips per year for a while, so the new MYW 10-day non-expiring ticket would suit our needs much better than an AP. My question is "Can I trade down my AP voucher to a ticket that costs less than the voucher?". If I can, what will Disney do with the balance between the cost of the voucher (approx $400) and the MYW ticket (approx $365). Will they give me the balance in cash or Disney Dollars?

Anyone know? Thanks in advance for any help.

I am 99% sure that downgrading tickets is not allowed. I think your only options are to turn in the voucher and get the AP or just buy a new MYW pass.

Does this mean if I have 2 days left on an old 1993 unexpired all park ticket, I have to purchase something more? Or can I just exchange straight up?

Your best bet is to just use the two remaining days and then buy an new ticket. You'll get entry at today's price for 1993 payment.

The reality is if you turn them in to buy new 5 day (or whatever # of day ticket you now need) you'll only get the value of what you paid for them say $35 a day (or whatever the 1993 price was) towards a current days pass $60 or so a day.

In many cases you should not use up an old ticket and also buy a new ticket, especially for 5 to 10 day vacations. Figure out how much you would need to pay for a new ticket with more days as if you did not have the old ticket compared with how much you would pay for a new ticket with fewer days while using the old ticket. Sometimes the difference is as little as three dollars a day.

It is OK to use an old ticket and buy a new 10 day ticket none of whose days are forfeited to expiration.

For trading up or down, if a feature on the old ticket has been exploited, your new ticket must have that feature. For example if you have a partly used hopper ticket and you hopped on one of the days (not counting to a water park) your new ticket must have the hopping option. If the old ticket had plusses and you went to a water park, your new ticket must have plusses.

Also you don't get any change back.

ok, I am confused. I have an old 2 day ticket....actually 2..1 adult/1 child. We only plan to go 1 day, so wouldn't even be using all of what is on these tickets. I was under the impression since these tickets were so old I HAD to exchange them as these aren't finger scannable and don't go into the fast pass machines, etc....so can I exchange for same thing straight up?

They probably will exchange your old tickets for how long that is on your original tickets. I'm trying to remember if AK was open then. Sometimes you may only have access to the parks that were open when you bought your ticket.

But who knows...... I've heard many answers to how Disney handles this. Might be a good question for them.....

Your tickets predate the magnetic strip tickets that are in use today. They must be exchanged at Guest Relations prior to your using them again. There is no charge for the exchange and you will get a magnetic strip ticket back with exactly the same unused admissions as the old one had. The child (now adult) should be with you when you do the exchange so GR can see that their age makes sense with the ages of the child's ticket 12 years ago. That ticket will be exchanged for an adult ticket also at no charge.

You can use the voucher toward the purchase of other tickets, but it has to be equal to or more than the value of the voucher when you purchased it.

No you can't. But you can apply it towards ticket purchases that exceed the amount you paid for the AP voucher when you bought it. In your case, you'd have to buy the 10 day MYW ticket and another ticket as well in order to use the voucher against it and then pay the difference.

The AP voucher is essentially like a gift card until it is exchanged for the actual AP ticket. The dollar amount can be used for anything else but you cannot get any money back from the transaction.

Currently when old non-magnetic tickets are exchanged, the new tickets are good at all four theme parks.

Although this is not Disney's policy, ask if you can have the old ticket back as a souvenir. If the ticket agent obliges he will stamp the old ticket with "void" in large black letters.

Well since its only a 35 dollar change what I would do is just keep the AP and book my hotel using the discount. You will save much more money(way more than the 35 dif) that way than paying rack rates.Just my opinion though.

Or just plan next years vacation a week ahead of time so you can use the ap again within the year... and you can then get the ap room discount 2x! even better

Thanks for all of your replies. My wife called Disney to ask them and after 2 calls and about 15 minutes on the phone she basically was told by the CM that he thought you couldn't do it, but we really wouldn't know until we got to the park and tried to exchange at the ticket window. (That's why I always ask here first, you can spend a lot of time on the phone with Disney and still not know the answer.) Those who replied that I could apply the original cost of the voucher as long as what I was buying was equal to or greater than the cost of the voucher are probably right but I don't want to take the chance of getting there and finding out I can't exchange and have to pay gate price when I could buy the same ticket at Ticketmania for a much cheaper price.

So what we'll probably do is buy 2 10 day tickets now and hold on to the AP voucher until my job situation changes (probably at retirement) and we can return to going more than 1 a year.

To Skylarr29: Your suggestions have a lot of logic except that they won't work for us beacause of the following reasons:

a)We already have ressies for this year's trip at the Dolphin for $99/night. I don't think we'll beat that with an AP rate...not at the Dolphin anyway.

b)My job situation doesn't allow me to know before hand that I will be able to take 2 trips in a 12 month period. If I can't, then the AP would expire before we return where as the 10 day ticket would sill be valid.

Go to Guest Relations in DTD when you arrive. They can answer your questions and offer suggestions. MAke exchanges etc there.
