Trade Request Response Etiquette

I have a new question on this popular topic.

First, let me establish my starting point. I always send a response to a Pinpics Trade Request.

So here's my question. . .

If you are saying "no" to the trade because you think it is an unfair (unequal) offer, should you explain that in your response?

I realize this could spark unwanted debates with the requestor.

On the other hand, couldn't it serve to clarify -- especially for new collectors -- how a pin may be valued?

So far, I've never explained any of my negative responses. But I always wonder if I should have provided some explanation.

What do you think?  :)

I always have responded to a trade request. Being a relatively new trader, maybe I am not inthe loop, but the trades that have been offered via pinpics have just been for state pins and everytime I replied with a "no thanks" it;s been because I have already traded the pin they are asking for. And I have told them that. I know I like to know why my offer has been turned down.

Hi Robyn, how have you been?

Robyn, I'm going to have to say no on this one. What one person feels is unfair someone else might jump at. Is it an unfair trade to offer a $4 state pin for a LE w/ lots of supply, like Song of the South Anniversary, even though it cost $10.50 (I think)?

I'm not offended when I receive seeming uneven trade requests. I figure they either don't know much about the pins yet (they will catch on soon enough), or they know, but they figure it's worth a shot.

Now, if every three days you are getting a request from the same person to trade their DS Hercules for your Diva Event pin, I think they need to be told. But just random uneven requests don't need more than a "no thanks".

If your responses are anything like mine, I either explain the pin is already involved in a trade, or just say no. I think the no explanation response pretty much says, without saying so, that you don't feel the trade is good, for whatever reason. You obviously don't value the pin they are offering as much as the pin you are trading.

However, I do find it nice when I make an offer that I feel is very fair and equally balanced that the negative response I get explains that while they are turning down the trade, it's not b/c they feel it unfair. For example, that they are only trading that pin for others in it's series.

Thanks just my two cents...

Nicole

I respond to all trade requests too. If there's a trade pending on the pin I'll mention it in my response otherwise I just say "Thanks but No Thanks." I also let the trader know if the pin has already been traded away.

I am just thrilled to hear that so far everyone is at least responding to their requests!! This is a debate I have had a few time with some other traders/collectors. I always respond, even if it is no, and think it is rude not to, although I know the people who don't respond feel their position is valid.

I hate to say "no" to a trade (which did get me in some trouble in WDW!), and if I do say "no", and it's because the trade was not "equal", usually I have not explained my reasons, but sometimes have indicated there is a specific pin (with a specific value) that I am hoping to trade for. It's still vague, but does give them a little more information. I think I would agree with Nigel, though, if it were the same request being received multiple times, that would warrant a detailed response as to why the trade was being denied.

Just today, however, I did this in reverse with a request. That is to say, someone offerred me a pin I had just gotten on my trip, so I offered a counter-trade, and since their pin was an LE, and mine "sold out" open stock, and highly desirable, I explained why I thought the trade was fair, so they wouldn't think I was making an unequitable trade offer.

It will be interesting to see what others think about this subject........

:)

I usually try to offer some explanation. If the request is realy off bas I may say something like "Thank you but I am not interested in this trade. " and may offer to trade something else or "put the ball in their court" by asking them to look at my wants and/or make another offer.

BTW for those that made requests in tha last 2 weeks: Between X-mas and my recent trip to WDW I am trying to get caught up. You should hear from me soon.

If I get an off base one from the trade assistant that I think must be a mistake (my
LE signed swan boat MK event pin for a pinpics pin) I have a good laugh and send a note that I would only
trade for a Disney pin of equal value..or the trade for my Cinderella hinged door coach, signed
by the artist for a pinpics pin...I did the same....and thanked them for their request...one wrote me back and
said she hadn't made the request, but thanks for my note..

I took myself off of the trade assistant, because I have traded so often down here that I can't
keep up with entering and removing my pins fast enough...but I still get quite a lot of requests

But I think if the request don't become overwhelming, a quick note should be sent explaining your point,
yea or nay..

Donna

I always fell bad because most of the pins that people want to trade for are already gone.

I just have not figured out an easy way to keep up with my pinpics.

I alway try to leave a response - but I have made lots of wonderful trades too.

Good topic for discussion, RobYn!
I always try to respond to the automated pin trade requests, usually with a short, but sweet "No, thank you anyway." I do give an explanation when I have already traded for the pin in question, or my list is not quite up-to-date. I do have to admit ignoring some pin trade requests, because they are the same uneven requests over and over again.
The thing that has irked me lately is, when the person that has sent the pin trade request out to begin with, does not respond to my acceptance of the request. I usually modify the request somewhat to include additional pins, because I think it's more efficient to trade more than one pin at a time. And on top of that (this is really what bugs me!) I continue to get pin trade requests from these same individuals that are ignoring my emails!

An easy way to update your Pin Pics traders is

1. Sign in.

2. Click on MY PIN PICS

3. Scroll down to where it says "Enter a user name to view their tradables"

4. Put in YOUR user name

5. Pick the view so you are looking at the pictures of your traders

6. Now keep looking till you find one you traded.

7. Click on the picture of the pin

8. Scroll down where it says TRADE ASSISTANT

9. Click remove pin from trade list :D

You can also add a pin to your want list and collection list or delete it.
You have to be logged in to do this. If you are not logged in.....the TRADE ASSISTANT section doesn't show up.

With that said, I shut off the Trade Assistant. I have had better luck emailing people that have the pin for trade with an offer. I used to answer all emails. There just got to be too many of them and I couldn't keep up.
