Does anyone use a Tracfone? MIL is looking to get a phone for emergencies and it looks like it would be cheaper to get one of these rather than adding a line on to our Verizon account.

What is the best amount to get with these? Are there any deals to get additional minutes?

Feel free to PM if there is a referral that would benefit us both ;)

Thanks :flower:

Hey there. I too was getting tired of paying so much for a phone that I am not either addicted to or have no need to use that often. I also just wanted it for emergencies....or calling home and asking if we have ketchup while I am standing in front of the ketchup at the grocery story :rotfl2: .
Anyway.....I love it. Paying $20 every other month sure beats out $40 every month, plus taxes.
I am a tracfone fan.... :cheer2:

Not sure of the details at all, but Staples had a pay as you go phone in the store yesterday that was free after the rebate. Not sure of how it all works, just thought I would let you know.

Hi,
I actually just bought one at Wal-Mart this afternoon for $19.99 for DH to use occasionally..I'm nervous about the winter driving (we're in CT) & we thought this would be a lot cheaper than adding a second cell phone to our plan.
BUT I went to epinion.com and read all the negative reviews and I'm seriously considering just returning the phone. It seems like they have terrible customer service. I haven't opened the phone or activated it. :confused3

I've had one for about 6 months and have been very happy with it. We use it for our DD when she goes away for the night or somewhere alone.

It's mainly good if you need a phone with just a few minutes ~ for a backup or emergency phone.

By the way, I saw that Office Depot has the Nokia 1100 for just $14.99 (but it only includes 20 minutes of free airtime).

When I was pricing this out about a year ago, Virgin was slightly cheaper for the almost-never-use-it guy than Tracfone. Tracfone required at least $20 be put on the phone ever 60 days, Virgin required $20 ever 90 days. Virgin has been good to me - I've love my phone and service. (Note - rules change from time to time, so I don't know if Tracfone's deal is still $20/60 days.)

Oh, and if the phone is really one for an emergency (as opposed to the once a week calls regarding ketchup) here's the true bargain plan: buy the cheapest pay-as-you-go cell phone you can find, and never put any money on it. Your service will run out, you will lose your number and the ability to make calls to friends. However, all cell phones are required to connect you to "911" regardless of whether or not you have active service. A lifetime (well, until the phone dies or the law/technology changes) of 911 coverage for $20-30.

Thanks everyone!

I was able to get one off of a reputable seller on ebay. I paid $23 shipped for a phone activated thru March with 120 minutes. We will probably get one of the year cards when we need to activate more time.

I can send a referral and detailed directions to anyone else who needs one to get set up. :cool1: Just send me a Private Message. :)

(Referrals only work when buying a new or reconditioned phone, not for anyone REactivating an old phone.)

Tracfones are great if you are going to use the phone very little. The battery & charger come with the phones. They have a package deal for 100 minutes with a reconditioned phone included for $29.99. There are now many deals at stores before Xmas, dropping the price down to $14.99 (Target) - $19.99 or $24.99.

The best way to utilize this deal is getting a referral to activate the phone to get a bonus free 100 minutes. Depending on how much you are going to use the phone, the trick is how & when to ADD the airtime minutes on in a way to get 6 full months of airtime before needing to buy another minutes card! Plus there are often promo bonus codes for another free 40 minutes, so you will be getting a total of 260 minutes + 6 months activation, all for the $29.99. :flower:

On the Tracfone website, there is a place to enter your zip code to see if they have coverage in your area. :sunny:

Tracfone doesn't have their own cell service, per se. What they do is RENT cell service from existing carriers in your area. Instead of getting a Verizon cellphone, & only having serviced dedicated to Verizon, when I've traveled, the Tracfone SWITCHED to whatever carrier was available to me, in that area.

When I've been in the boonies with friends & we all turned on our phones. The Sprint people almost never had coverage because of the all digital network. If there was a carrier out there that Tracfone works with, I usually had service. Something to think about whether you decide on a cellphone carrier, Tracfone or otherwise. Of course, in some areas, none of us had any service.

Tracfone does give you 30 days to RETURN your phone if you find out, it doesn't have enough service/coverage for you or not the plan you want. I think this is what the "reconditioned" phones are that Tracfone is selling for the $30 +100 minutes. When you return a used phone, Tracfone has to wipe the old telephone number from it's memory before selling it again. :)

::yes::

GS's tracfone worked in the boonies while visiting relatives in tennessee and DH's nextel had no signal.

I've been using Tracfone for almost 5 years now. I've never had any problem with them. Their customer service is from another country, so you really have to concentrate on what they're saying so you can understand them :earseek: . I've been buying another phone (for $20) at Wal Mart insted of buying airtime cards. I refer myself (with a different e-mail) and get 100 minutes on each phone. After a few weeks, I transfer the minutes for the new phone (the $20 one) to my flip-phone and just give the unactivated phone to goodwill or somewhere like that (you can still dial 911 if it's not activated).

what do you mean about transferring minutes? would you explain this a little more please? my dd has a tracfone now with about 100 minutes that will expire in 1 month, and, as you know, it'll be more economical to activate a whole new "referred" phone. is there some way to save her minutes? does it cost $$ to transfer? thx.
