Like a lot of people, I need a car that gets GREAT mileage for my commute. I am thinking of taking a look at the Prius. I would buy used.
Any real life reviews?

I bought my first Prius in 2006 and loved it!! Traded that one in for a 2010 Prius because I wanted the sun roof.

I loved that so much we just bought a second 2010 Prius!! I went from spending 150/month on gas back in 2006 when I drove my Honda Oddysey to only spending between $40 - $45/month. Even back when gas hit >$4 a gallon, I was still only spending about $50/month!! :cloud9:

Very comfortable car and people who've ridden in the back love all the leg room.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy one - especially with the gas prices on the rise.

You never had to replace a battery right? That's my DH''s big concern.
I commute about 100 miles a day so need something less expensive.
thanks.

Never replaced anything. Just oil changes. The Prius is actually in its 14th model year. This is not a new car/concept. You'll save a lot of money in gas if he's traveling 100 miles/day.

Also, Toyota oil changes are now every 10,000 miles due to using synthtic oil.

another option if you enjoy the act of driving:

Honda Fit Sport

winner of all sorts of awards...very versatile/roomy/great mileage...actually FUN to drive.

I love my 2010 Prius! :thumbsup2

Check out the site prisuchat.com. Lots of helpful information there.

I have a 2005. 114,000 miles. Only have done oil changes. Great car. I went from spending 550.00 a month in gas to 120.00 a month.

Sounds like a pretty great car....

I would LOVE one! Dh wants to wait until the newer electric cars come out and see/compare.

The Honda Fit gets about the same mileage as our Saturn VUE 4 cyl. I get over 30. I try to use that car more than the Toyota SUV. DH has a 1996 Saturn Station wagon that gets over 30 as well.....the thing WILL NOT DIE! He commutes with it.

But when we need another car, I will be looking at a Prius or another elec./hybrid car with similar mpg.

The problem for us is that the Prius is about $20K.....that is a huge amount of gas as our 3 cars are all running well and paid for!

We have an 09 with about 45K on it. No problems. We LOVE it. And, are actually thinking about getting a second one. Love everything about it.

We have 2 - 2010's. Leased one, took loan on one. The money we save in gas money pays for the lease.

I was in an accident in Dec and my Prius was totaled. We went out and got a new one right away.

I've had one for coming up on four years, 45000 miles. I drive 18 miles round trip to work, and I get gas just about once a month, depending on how much I drive on the weekend. I change the oil myself and get the tires rotated and balanced, and that's been it. I'm 6'1" and with the driver's seat adjusted the way I wanted, I can sit in the rear seat and my knees don't touch the front seat back. I've carried a six foot ladder with the hatch closed.

The strangest part of owning one is how often people feel compelled to say something snotty or tell you how bad Prius drivers are. I was never given to thinking driving a Prius was saving the world, but there is some history of that so you're paying for others' sins. I got one strictly for commuting, so I wanted to best mileage I could get. My fun car is a '96 Z28, which isn't even close to stock, and I drag race on a regular basis.

Ditto on this. The brakes are a bit meager, however. The rest of the car is a blast to drive, and much cheaper than the Mini Cooper. The new Fiesta from Ford apparently isn't bad either, and reviewers have been topping 40 miles to the gallon on both the transmission options.

They seem like neat cars.
Remember you likely won't recoup the initial cost difference despite the outstanding gas mileage, and those batteries have a pretty heavy toll on the environment in both their manufacture, and recycling at the end of their life.
As for how long they last, go to E-Bay and look at how many Prius' up for sale have new batteries.
