We are going to MNSSHP on our arrival day. Just to be safe, I want to have all our costumes with us on the plane in case our luggage does not arrive before we leave for the party. Kids are Peter Pan and Tinkerbell. I have a small toy sword (peter pan) and toy hook (Captain Hook, for DH). They are from those toy kits you get for young kids, they are plastic, very round edges, safe for young kids. Will that be an issue for security?

I didn't think of it until now since they are such tame toys, but I'd hate for them to be taken away.

Thanks for the link, but I'm still unsure. How realistic does it need to be or do they have a problem with anything shaped like a sword? These are the toys.

I would take them in my carry on and place them on top so if the bags are opened it's clear what they are. Have your kids right next to you too. It would be pretty sad if tsa thought they were real.

Personally I would leave the sword at home - TSA is going to be viewing it through the scanner and it may not be obvious that it is a toy. Your carryon will definitely be opened and searched resulting in at least a delay and maybe more extensive screening.

I would prepare your son for the possibilities including having to discard the sword if it isn't allowed.

I'd be prepared to replace them, and take them. Having the kids *right there* helps. We have taken the large plastic sword given with the Knight's Package at BBB, and later the Stormtrooper Blaster in carryons (through LAX). On the top of easy-open tote bag, talked a lot with DS about it, went in with smiles and kindness and understanding, and with the cutie-pie kid right there.

No guarantees but I'd try it!

My boys have purchased the small wooden guns from the pirate ride area and they have carried the on each time. The only ones I have shipped in luggage, they told me to put them in there when we bought them, and that was the long rifle type. The boys also got a plastic sword from the castle dinner and they carried it on as well. Id bring them and if need be replace them, but they look like plastic to me. Call TSA maybe?

When you go through security, you can take things out of your bag and put them in the bin.

My husband and I have both had our bags manually inspected after they couldn't figure out what was inside (roll of quarters, small portable tripod). Both times the TSA agent said we should pull out items that might be confusing and place them in the bin next time.

This way the agents can see that it's not dangerous and that you're not trying to sneak anything through.

Thanks for the advice. I plan to take the costume accessories in a shopping bag so the delicate items won's get smushed so I can just take the sword and hook out an put it on top. We might let the girls wear their costumes on the plane so hopefully that will help. Fingers crossed!

Great plan - not sure the kids need to dress up, my kids would prefer comfy clothes when traveling (unless they want to of course!). Just be sure the owner of the sword is prepared for the worst and maybe budget $ to replace it at the parks if necessary.
Good Luck and have fun - we did the MNSSHP on the 9th and had a GREAT time.
