Toy Story Mania - motion sickness?

My dad gets motion sickness. When we go to WDW, he rides most rides (he loves The Haunted Mansion, Splash Mountain, The Great Movie Ride, It's a Small World, Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin, Pirates of the Caribbean), but doesn't go on rides like Space Mountain, Rock N' Roller Coaster and the tea cups. I really, really think he'd like Toy Story Mania and want to take him on it when we're at WDW in about a week, but I'm not sure if it's mild enough or not. When he asked me if it spins (spinning makes him sick), I wasn't sure how to respond. The ride doesn't really "spin" to me, it just kinda of shifts you to a new screen by whipping you around a few times. What do you think - if someone doesn't like spinning rides, is TSM a no-no or not?

Bonnie,

Great quetion I need to know too.. for dh. Do you know if this ride has a height requirment?

I would say it spins. It's not like the teacups, but if he's bothered by any spinning he's going to notice it. I also heard that people who had to wear their prescription glasses with the 3-D glasses had more of a problem with motion sickness.

I can't imagine there being much of a problem with dizziness on this ride. It just doesn't spin that much or that fast. It didn't bother me in the least. Teacups, RNR, etc are completely different!

It's a very gentle ride-no spinning at all. Just the shifting which was not abrupt

Well, that's the thing..you can choose if you want to spin in Buzz or not, but in TSM, you don't control it.

It doesn't spin, it just turns to take you to the next scene. It only takes like 5 seconds and then you are still for at least a minute.

It is very smooth and you are looking at things around you. I have lots of trouble with motion and this did not bother me at all. What bothered me was losing to my wife again and again. Someday I win!

It IS possible for somebody with an inner ear problem to get motion sick on this ride. A friend of mine has an inner ear problem, takes Bonine (non-drowsy Dramamine-type drug) every day at Disney, and she would get sick on TSM not only from the small amount of spinning but from the 3-D. Other 3-D things have made her ill (as have movies like the one in Soarin', so she can't do that ride either) and a ride with spinning similar to that of TSM (I showed her the video of it) she has been on has made her ill. So, she won't be going on TSM.

Even with the Bonine, she can't go on rides that would make her ill like Rock'n'Roller Coaster, Mission: SPACE, etc. She can do Tower of Terror because it is straight up and down, so that's her favorite since it is about the only thrill ride she can go on.

Just spinning herself around once can make her ill, so she has a severe case. Not everybody is like that, of course.

Ok, I officially change my answer to "I have some trouble with motion". I am sorry to hear that your friend has such an intense reaction and has to miss so many rides. Who would have thought that Tower of Terror would be some ones "safe" ride?

Rain, I wasn't typing my reply to you, in case you thought that. Actually, I didn't even see your post until I'd sent my reply in since we were typing at the same time. I was just replying to the OP. :)

I have what I consider a serious case of motion sickness. I cannot even look at the teacups without getting a little queasy. I have riden toy story mania several times, and I can tell you that I have not had ANY problems with it. No sickness at all.

Hope this helps.

I would agree with this. I have mild to moderate motion sickness, and I rode TSM. It bothered me, but not as bad as I thought it might. There is some jerky motion/spinning, but it isn't full 360-degree spinning, if that makes sense. I have more trouble on things like Soarin', the teacups, and Mickey's Philharmagic.

I think that if he can handle Buzz Lightyear, Toy Story Mania will be fine.
those are two totally different kinds of motion experiences, I think. In BL, you have some control with the spinning. But, I have motion issues with the tunnel section of that ride, even not moving the car at all. I've got to close my eyes or it makes me queasy.

TSM is more moving, less spinning. At least, no spinning in a circle.

I get motion sick, and I did have trouble with TSM. In Buzz Lightyear's ride you can control the spinning and you don't have to wear 3D glasses. On TSM, the combination of lack of control over the spinning, along with the 3D glasses really gets you. I didn't get as sick as I would with something like the teacups, but I still wouldn't ride TSM again. Also, my mother gets motion sick too and was waiting outside for a baby swap, but she chose not to ride after I told her about it.

Hope this helps!

Do you think it would help if he ate a light breakfast that morning and took some type of non-drowsy dramamine, just in case. From everything i've read and seen it seems like if you can do Buzz Lightyear you could so TSM. If you go to youtube you can do a search for it and some video tapes of the ride are on there. Let him watch them and see what he thinks...the only thing is the 3d doesn't translate too well on video:goodvibes

My dh has SEVERE motion sickness. He gets sick on all rollercoasters, airplanes, subways, etc.... Well, on TSM, he felt a little ill, but it went away a few minutes after riding.

One tip is that he found that if he sat in a seat that faced forward (rather than face backwards), it wasn't so bad. It's true that all the cars spin, but if he was facing in a forward seat, it wasn't as bad as when he faced backwards.
