I definitely think it's a lot darker than the other movies, but I still think there were plenty of laughter moments throughout the film. For me, mostly with Barbie and Ken. And Mr. Potato Head stole a scene or two. (NO SPOILERS!)
Every Disney or Pixar movie has scary moments in it. From "Snow White" (the evil queen's transformation into the witch), to "Sleeping Beauty" ("Now you will deal with ME, oh prince, and all the powers of HELL!"). And the Pixar films, too. Sid's scenes from the original "Toy Story" were creepy and scary at first, too. "The Incredibles" had a villain willing to kill children (super hero children, but kids all the same!)
The common factor for all these films is that the storyline matters, and it appeals to people of all ages, not just kids. I would not suffer the new Smurf movie I saw in the trailers if you paid me to go see it.
