:confused3 We are going to WDW in July, and my DD5 is set on going on the Tower of Terror. She is tall for her age and meets the minimum height requirements. We have never been to Disney before, so I know nothing about these rides. Is this something she would enjoy, or something we should save for a later trip?

IMO, I'd wait.

Kids are all different though, maybe she'd be fine with very spooky ghost type images and then a creepy elevator and free falling type drops in darkness.

It is a cool ride, but as the name states, it is terrifying!

Have a great time!

We went when my DD was 5 years and 1 month --I was not going to pressure her to ride , when we were walking up to it my older DD8 asked her if she was going to ride and she said "Okay one time!" We were so suprised and she was so proud of her ride she said it was her favorite ride and told everyone we saw in any line about her "favorite ride" It was so cute--right after we rode I asked if she wanted to ride again and she said "Not this time I want to save my energy for the rest of the rides." She still talks about her favorite ride!! :thumbsup2

She should be fine. All three of our kids have ridden it around age 4. If she is willing to do it go for it.

We went a few weeks ago and my 5 yo DGD was saying she was going to ride ToT. I was very skeptical. I did not think it was a good idea. (I won't ride it again, it was way too intense for me). Anyway she went with her Dad and she came off very excited, saying she loved it. She talked about the drops and how much fun it was. She said she was going to go again.
Later in the week we were back at MGM, but she did not want to go again that day.

We just came back from WDW yesterday. I have 2 daughters ages 4 and 6. I never told them that Tower of Terror could be scary because i didn't want them to have that preset in their mind. Instead i tried to get them excited to go on it. I explained that it is just a ride with a story and told them about the story. I also found somethign about the Tower of Terror on line that showed them what the ride looked like and what it did just so that they would be prepared. When we got there i asked them if they wanted to go on and they both did. After the ride both my children said they liked it, but found the image of the 5 people disappearing a bit disturbing. Only my 6 year old was willing to go back on, but we never did. I could tell she was spooked, but didn't want to say it. I would never push my kids to go on, but we try to at least get them try everything and then decide. But that doesn't always work, my little one never made it on the Haunted Mansion this year. I think every kid is different. There is always a way out so that you don't have to ride the elevator if your child becomes too scared.

My 5 y.o. is a total adrenaline junkie. She couldn't wait to go on this last trip...true to her word, she went on it 4 times and LOVED IT

I don't think the age will matter, but the child themself, how they feel about doing the ride. Of course the height requirement must be met, and you say she is tall for her age. I would leave it up to the child without pressure to go on any ride. My grandson keeps gettng measured for BTMRR, he's not tall enough and wants to ride it, its all he talks about. But Son and DIL keep measuring him each time he asks. Am I there yet, I sure hope he makes it, he's going to be one disappointed little boy if he can't ride.

It's up to her whether she wants to ride it or not. Just remember, as with any Disney attraction, you can always bail out of things get to intense. If she really wants to ride it, here's how the attraction goes -

SPOILERS

You will enter the lobby in the queue. It's dusty and creepy. Then, in groups, you will be taken into the library where you are shown a video clip of Rod Sterling telling you the story of the Hollywood Hotel. You will be in the dark and there will be a storm going on "outside". From there, you will go into the boiler room to line up for the elevator ride to the 13th floor. The boiler room is creepy as well. Once you get to the elevators, if your daughter still wants to go on the attraction, board. If not, if she's a little scared, just tell the seater that you want to leave. They will escort you to another elevator that will deposit you at the exit of the attraction (inside). You can wait there for the rest of your party.

For me, the whole build up to the actual elevator is the attraction. I can't do the drop anymore because of a neck injury but I'll certainly enjoy everything else that I can.

I took my son last summer and he rode it at 4. At first he wanted to but just before we got in the elevator he didn't want to. So, we took the "chicken exit" elevator down to the bottom floor. Then when we get to the bottom floor, he wanted to so we took the "chicken exit" elevator up to the loading area. The CM's were great and really took their time with him. They took him in, got him settled, brought the other people in, etc.

Well, let me say that ToT is not one of my favorite rides, but he loved it. He told me his favorite part was when his "hiney" came up off the seat - absolutely strikes fear in my heart, but I didn't feel I needed to share that.

As soon as he got off, he used is baby-swap pass to ride with Omi while I sat with my daughter. Loved it even more the second time!

I think it depends on the child and how it is presented. We really push that nothing in Disney can hurt you.

Hope that helps.

I agree, it depends on the child. DD was 5 on our last trip and said she wanted to go on it. (DS age 7 wanted no part of it!)

When DD got off she said, "Maybe I should wait until I'm six to ride this again."
:lmao:

She does love her "I survived" shirt!

First, I'm pretty sure there was a long thread on this same basic topic in the not so distant past. Maybe it was more about which rides and not TOT specifically although TOT was discussed a lot. Like a lot of these kinds of topics, this one before engendered a lot of discussion, both pro & con and some good parents vs. bad parents kind of thing as well.

Second, I think only YOU can really assess what will work for you child and what won't. So, I think you are wise to try to get a handle on others' experiences before you go.

On our Dec. '05 trip, we let you 6 & 1/2 year old pick what we would do first. She said she wanted to do TOT so we planned our first day for MGM. Not sure why she picked it, but maybe because she'd seen the TOT-themed movie on the Disney channel. Also, she likes the little frog hopper dropping ride at local carnivals. We took both girls through the TOT line not knowing whether the younger one who was 3 & 1/2 and right at the height cut-off would make it. We planned for one parent to leave w/ the younger girl if we couldn't all go. I tried to give the girls a little heads up. Although I hadn't been on the ride, I knew the general story and that the some of the queue could be a little scary for younger kids. We talked about that and our girls were prepared. The CMs ended up letting the little girl on w/o so much as a second glance. Another set of parents were right next to us and had two little boys almost identical in age to our girls. The girls were nervous, but they aren't easily deterred. When we got seated, the CM was asking something about who was ready and our little one raised her hands. Everyone got a kick out of that because ... w/ both hands up .... everyone thought she was doing the thrill-seeker-hands-in-the-air thing. The CM used that to rib all the scared adults.

Even though we'd read up on the ride, what we were not prepared for was the DARK. Not, it seems it would only make sense in hindsight, but it caught us off guard.

Also, we adults weren't prepared for how much our big ol' butts would leave the seat so we panicked a little about trying to keep a hold of our girls.

In the end ... the boys in front of us ... in the words of Chicken Little's dad ... screamed like little girls (and did somecrying, too). Our girls were pretty stoic about it. No tears. No freaking out. Both SAID they liked it; however, both said they wouldn't ride it again.

Actually, maelstrom in World Showcase ended up "scaring" the little one more and she used that as her standard against which to measure things like POC.

Later in the trip, both girls LOVED Splash & Big Thunder Mountains, and we rode them repeatedly. Our older daughter also love Primeval Whirl. So, it wasn't the "thrilling" part of the right that probably got to them, more of the setting.

Since that trip, our older daughter has come to me on her own and said she'd do TOT on the next trip. Her reasoning ... she'd be bigger/older and she'd know what to expect.

Both my husband and I REALLY enjoyed TOT and look forward to riding it again.

Good luck w/ your decision.

My ds-5 rode ToT in April. I gave him the option and let him know that he could go down the "express elevator" with Nana and DD-4 if he wanted to back out. He must have changed his mind a dozen times in the que. He would say "I don't want to ride" and I would say "Ok, you don't have to." and he would say "But I do want to ride" and I would say "ok, that is fine too". I really didn't think he would do it but he was a trooper and did it and loved it. The things that scared him the most throughout our trip were the unexpected. It seemed like as long as knew what was coming, he was fine. Before he rode ToT, I explained everything that would happen so there would be no suprises (except for the drop sequence ;) ) Let your DD go through the que and let her decide.

Terri

I agree I think this one depends on your own child.

My DD rode it when she had just turned 5 - she loved it (in the photo she is the only one laughing on the drop - the rest of us are screaming in terror :teeth: )
however Dinosaur at AK scared the living daylights out her (so much so we didnt even attempt Its tough To Be A Bug)

However my friend's son at 5 loved Dinosaur & hated ToT (and the Haunted Mansion )

Oh and my mother who was with us wouldn't go on at all (I won't reveal her age but let's just say she's a little bit older than 5 :teeth: )

So as I said before I think it depends on your child and sometimes even as a parent its hard to judge what they will cope with and what they wont.

I would let her queue up and have her decide once she gets to the ride bit. (best if you can use fastpasses so you won't feel so bad about wasted time if she changes her mind)

Let her watch from the outside and then she can decide if she wants to do it. She can see the doors open at the top and hear the people screaming as the fall down. My son loves this ride. He too is tall for his age and has been riding it since he was three and a half. She may not like it though.

It really does depend on the child....IMHO the ride/drop part isn't that bad at all, if you are unsure the first time, sit in the back row of the car the first time. It feels a bit safer back there.

I took my nieces on TOT, one was 5, one was 6. They both loved the drop part, but neither liked the spooky beginning of the ride...the 5 year old hated the dark room with the TV that plays a clip of Twilight Zone. The 6 year old told me she "just knew she was going to have nightmares" (she didn't though) Both rode again, but closed their eyes for the dark room and for the parts in the car before the drops (like where the 5 people disappear)

Id just let her know what happens in it- the fact that youre thrown up and down a lot and really fast-and if she still wants to go she can go. The height limit is pretty short. You dont have to be tall for 5 to be able to go on. Therefore I dont see why it isnt for her age.

:thumbsup2 Thanks for all of your advice and experiences. It also helps to know there is a "chicken exit". If not for my DD, but for me also :goodvibes .
