Tower of Terror 10 Miler 2014

I'm only at 4 miles now for my weekend runs. There are lots of things I need to learn - and overcome - before ToT!

This is where I am too. So there's several of us in the same boat.

I think there's going to be some serious celebrating going on at the end.
And here I was worried I wouldn't make any friends running. :)

I absolutely hate having to check a bag. If I don't will I be the only one who has not changed clothes? I realize that it will be humid but I can't feel any worse than I do after the Peachtree Road Race. I don't get to change after that race and hang out in a corporate tent for a while and then ride the Marta back to my car.

I'll be running the Peachtree too! It will be DS's first time this year. He's very excited.

He'll love the Peachtree unless he hates crowds. The spectators are very encouraging during the race. I have a red, white, and blue tutu to wear this year. I didn't wear it during last years because of the rain. It will be my 3rd time running, 4th time registered. We adopted our son and he was placed in our home a week before the race. I wasn't getting enough sleep with a 3 week old in the house to be able to run a 10K.

No, we didn't take a bag and didn't change afterward, and we weren't the only ones. Considering how sweaty people get just walking through the parks and all some days, and everyone there understanding that you just ran 10 miles, I don't think anyone really thinks anything of it.

I was on the Fantasy last year over the fourth and missed it. So looking forward to this year. I have a red white and blue sparkle skirt I will be wearing. I did a tutu two years ago and it was fun. But I am a sparkle skirt convert now! Lol

There were lots of people last year in their running clothes.

That's also why I'm investing in one of these babies. It'll be nice to have backup in case the water stations are crazy. :)

RaceBak

Wow, that's cool. I use a Nathan hydration backpack, but that's pretty neat.

The race is 95% sold...
If you, or someone you know, is on the fence, you need to decide soon!

In case it helps anyone, here's what I've brought in my checked bag for TOT:

damp washcloth in a ziploc
small dry towel
clean shirt, bottoms, underwear
flip flops
Clif bar
hat or bandanna (I have short hair that requires a gazillion products and tools to look decent after being soaked - much easier to just cover it up)
small first aid kit - bandaids, neosporin, ibuprofren

Everything goes into a shoulder bag or backpack, which goes into the clear bag check bag provided by rD. After I pick it up, the backpack comes out and the wet race clothes go into the plastic bag, then into the shoulder bag/backpack, which is loads easier to carry than the plastic rD bags.

I LOVE this!

First.. the wet cloth in a ziplock. PERFECT. Last year the one they handed out... I realized a little too late it wasn't just damp with water so my lips.. little numb. :rotfl:

The backpack is brilliant! I have always just toss everything into that bag... then it flops around and really it is hard to find things in it. I am SO going to do this from now on. :thumbsup2

Thanks to those that responded with the encouragement. I know I will be fine, just nervous. I have a lot to learn as well. I do Insanity from Beachbody. Not sure if anyone ever heard of it. It is hard work. But, I do it in my house and I have access to fluids whenever I need them. I do ride my bike as well, but I have not really gone out on the humid days because until recently I made excuses to not take care of myself. So, signing up for this race and doing it over a thousand miles away from my house is a huge step for me.

So, I will be paying close attention to all the tips shared here. Now I just need to figure out how to buy the "right" pair of running shoes.

Thanks to all who have helped, and will help in the future.

This. Some people underestimate the humidity and wait to start hydrating until they're already starting to feel the effects. In addition to sipping water throughout, I also drizzled a bit of water on top of my head and down my back just to feel a little cooler through each mile. If you're proactive and listen to your body, you'll be fine even if the weather isn't comfortable.

This!

Be proactive about it. It was very humid at PHM weekend, and I had been training in New England all winter, so even my treadmill runs were a little chillier than Florida (I keep the heat off in the room the treadmill is in).
I starting drinking tons of water several days before leaving for Disney, made sure I had a full glass or 2 with each meal there and was sipping throughout the day. The morning of the races, I drank a bottle of water and a bottle of power aid between when I woke up and the start of the race (for the 10k and the half). This worked out great for me and I barely felt the humidity (in terms of illness-boy was I sweaty!) in either race.
Downside was I desperately needed a bathroom stop about 2 miles in to each race, but I'd rather than then feel weak/sick from dehydration!

That was a bit of a long story but the take home point is be proactive, prepare for the humidity, as then don't stress about it!

I third all this! And add, don't forget the electrolytes you are sweating out. Water alone may not be enough when it's that humid. I have also learned that when the weather doesn't cooperate (as in, you have been running in 40 degree weather all winter and suddenly racing in 63 degrees and 100% humidity), it is DEFINITELY better to slow down rather than puke or pass out. I actually made it through princess with these two strategies: proper hydration/electrolyte replacement (not over doing the water, not under doing it either), and slowing my pace. I wasn't thrilled with my time, but I was glad to enjoy the rest of the day- unlike wine and dine 2013!

Use the long summer runs to practice your hydration and fuel plans.

I'm admittedly a big Eisner fan, but that's just BRILLIANT! :worship:

Did I read this right? You are an Eisner fan? Bc I am too and usually all I read is bashing. Just wanted to be sure it wasn't a typo. Not trying to start a debate of course, on this lovely running thread. I "grew up" in the Eisner Disney era and rather enjoyed it. (Ok, I wasn't a kid, but it's when I started to get into WDW and became interested the Disney co).

Does anyone know if I can still get the Disney Visa discount for this run? And if so, how do I do that? Thank you so much!

If you haven't registered yet you can certainly try it -- I think you should see if it applies or not before ever confirming registration and being charged. If you did already register I'd call and check with runDisney. We called after registering for EEC and were able to email our info for a refund of the discount on the last eligible day of the discount.

Good luck!

I have a question for anyone who has run before. I am staying at the Beach Club and I was wondering if I would be able to take the boat or walk down to Hollywood studios before the race?

Of course you can do either one,I spent all day at Epcot and walked over to DHS before the race.

We're wait listed for Boardwalk. Hoping it comes through! I would prefer to walk to the start and walk/stumble back :)
