Towel Animal Question (No Flames Please)

On our recent stay at WL, we received a mother duck and a baby duckie, and two cute puppies. We also came back to a towel vase with pipe cleaner flowers. The ducks sit around the tub in my bathroom, the vase is on the shelf in the guest bath and the two puppies are on shelf in my DS' bathroom. We were told that they are made from the washclothes and towels that have been taken out of the rotation for one reason or another. They look cute on the shelves and they remind us of our happy place.

I always figured there were different rules for different types of towel animals. I have never taken one myself, but I always assumed that ones like this swan (DCL) and Mickey head (All Star Sports) were there for show and not to be taken home.

And the ones with stickers or glitter could be taken home since the towels could likely not be used again. (Pic from SSR.)

At the Poly in the concierge lounge they sit there and make them and encourage you to take with --

We got 2 small ones on our last trip and I took them home. My DS put them in our bathroom. One is a tiny fish and I'm not sure what the other is. An octupus maybe. They were just made from one washcloth each, so I didn't feel any guilt about taking them.

Towel animals are famous on cruises

OT, but my boss lost her glasses on her last cruise, and struggled to read the menus etc for a few days until she realized that her glasses were on a towel monkey that was hanging in her room!!! :rotfl2: She had even taken a picture of it and hadn't realized the glasses were there!! :rotfl2:
Stuff like that always happens to her.

I would never have thought of doing this, but I did read the post further down that mousekeeping at WL said it was ok to take them home. I have to wonder if the mousekeeper was being sarastic though.

The towel animals are really nice - but they're just towels made into animals and I can't understand why anyone would want to take them home.

No wonder the hotel prices are going up if people are taking their towels. If Disney are OKing this, I think I'm going to ask for a discount on my room for not taking mine!

The continuing fascination with towel animals and the question of taking them home always amazes me.

We got many during out recent stay at WL. And what I found out in discussion with our mousekeeper was that they are being asked by their employer to make more and more of them, with no extra time, because the guests LOVE them. However, there's a policy that mousekeeping is not supposed to OFFER the towel animals for transport home, but if you ASK, they are supposed to please you and say yes.

This really cleared things up for me!

We received them at YC and AKL and both times were told to take them. At the YC when we asked we were told "we made them for you. We would hope you to take them"
I also know someone who works at WDW and I asked them and they told me everyone expects you to take them.:)

Every CM and/or manager will give you a different answer. We take them home and I always tip extra if we get one. No the Cm does not have to make them, but I feel they are doing something extra for us.........

Is this something you have to ask for? And is it only available at certain resorts? can you "request" an animal?

AKL Concierge made my son a pretty good sized giraffe with eyes and pipe cleaners all glued together. They told him to keep it. I think it is still in our house somewhere. He slept with that thing every night while we were there. LOL.

It's just something that happens and not all the time. In fact, it probably happens a lot less than people think. Some of the resorts actually have classes to show you how to make these. Plus there is a book you can get on Amazon or Barnes & Noble to make these yourself.

Personally, I'd rather have a clean room in a timely manner than the towel animals.

Thank you! :thumbsup2

I never recieved a towel animal until we stayed at the GF...and they are so cute, so I take mine home. I put them in a baggie and display them with my disney collectables. The only one I didnt take was a huge birthday cake, cause it had a ton of towels (adult size) and I just took a picture of it and left it. But I have 5 of them and they are just adorable.
:cool1:

We've gotten them on DCL and ASSp, but it never occurred to me to keep them!!

I think a better idea is to buy the book Towel Origami so you can have the fun of making them at home! We bought the book on the cruise, and every now and then I surprise DD with one.

Here's one from the cruise

We've been lucky enough to get towel animals on every trip (ASSp, BC, AKL, and CR). The last time, when we were checking out of AKL, we left all the towel animals, and as we were exiting the room, the mousekeeper seemed disappointed that we were leaving them! I felt embarrrassed that maybe we were offending her and her handiwork, so I took them.

If you don't take them home, what do they do with them? It must take time to peel off the stickers and unravel those towels/clothes to rewash and recreate for other guests. Do they just recycle them without washing them? Some of our animals were elaborate things put together with rubber bands and decorations.

I myself have never stayed on site, but next year i will be, i hope to recieve but if not i'll be fine. You just have to look at it as a bonus and not something you have to get. It's a little magic to add to your trip. It's been said that if you leave sunglasses or stuffed animals in your room where they are visible, the chances are higher to recieve one. With the glasses they put them on a monkey (usually)

Personally i would take them home with me. I don't see much of a problem. I mean if you just leave them there they are going to get washed (HOPEFULLY...) and redone. However if i recieve a towel animal that uses more than 1 towel i will not take it.

I think you'd be fine with taking one ;)

Wow! These sound so cute! I had heard of them before, but had no idea they could be so elaborate. We'll be staying on property for the first time ever in November (and DS 2.5 first trip.) I hope to see one in person! But, I understand that magic is magic, and it happens in diff't ways on everyone's trip. But, the pictures are wonderful for those of us who haven't seen them.

Keep 'em coming! (please) :)
