TouringPlans sunsetting room requests

So I was at the front desk complaining about a real issue and there was someone there very upset they didn’t get their room view request. DVC not cash. CM were trying to accommodate them and they were not happy. These types of people will be the reason why if room requests are terminated completely.

Ridiculous.

Since COVID happened ton of people seem to have developed main character syndrome. Everything has to be perfect for them because they are the most important person in the world at the detriment of everyone else. Cutting in lines, butting in conversations, etc.

The worst thing I have experienced recently was at Wailulu Bar & Grill on our last trip. We had a reservation, checked in, then went outside to sit while we waited for our "table is ready" text. We wait until we get the text then head back to the hostess. The only one by the entrance. There is one person talking to her, so I get in line.

That person finishes, and as I am now beginning to talk to the hostess, a family that has been sitting in the benches nearby waiting on their text message apparently get's their message. After I start telling the hostess what I need the mom in the group stands up, barges in next to me and says "oh we got our text!" loudly to the hostess.

The hostess says sorry to me and says "give me a moment, please let me help them first" and proceeds to find their table and seat them, despite the fact that we checked in first, got our text first, and were in line first, patiently waiting while she just barged in. I don't get flustered easily but internally I was livid for a brief moment before I processed it and calmed myself. I strongly considered reporting/complaining about the cast member before just relaxing and dropping it. I figure the cast member was just trying to avoid an explosion from the extremely rude guest.

But it's just appalling what some people do at Disney. We usually laugh about it and people watch and point out those who aren't having a "magical" time, but this one caught me off guard! So I imagine the cast members get a lot of complaints from people expecting the exact view they requested every time they visit

So I personally am quite happy if they are changing their systems (whether it's the room request system or others) in a way in which complainers/rude guests are no longer able to be catered to. It is a slippery slope if they keep giving into these types of guests.

I would much rather have a system of random chance (as it was supposed to be for these past years), or be given an "earned" advantage either as some sort of reward for a loyalty program or for direct purchasers.

I don’t think I will ever understand how surviving Covid made so many people more selfish/self-involved. I would have guessed the opposite.

Yes the entitlement of some people is so beyond shocking. Everyone paid a lot to be here not just you. I often hear people complaining about what they paid to CM like that means the day should be perfect.

I have on many occasions looked at another adult who did something similar to what you described and said “Excuse me, I was already talking to them, you can wait your turn until I am finished.”

Their tears and grumbles after I do that sound like chirping birds in a meadow to my ears. 😁

Yeah, probably a combination of isolation and being cooped up during the pandemic (people forgetting how to act in crowded public situations after a couple years without these situations) and social media as @AstroBlasters said, which is all about borderline toxic bragging and influencing now.

It just really threw me off that the cast member went along with it. Should be a priority IMO for CMs to stop things like that where rude guests can negatively affect other guests' experiences

I think it's actually Social Media Syndrome. Covid was just chronologically coincidental (or maybe made it worse).

Social media has made people become deluded into thinking that their opinion is important, and then the social media companies' algorithms reinforce that by spoon-feeding them content that fits their opinions' narratives.

It accelerated then, but was already quite prevalent---particularly at Disney, where there are a surprising number of entitled guests. For example, at DLR, the Cast (very quietly) used to refer to a Certain Sort Of APer as a p*sshole.

Now that they are Magic Keys, that term has probably fallen into disuse, more's the pity.

Maybe a “Keyster”?

Or a "Magic B"
or maybe "Keyhole"

I guess it depends whether it was a request or if they booked a certain view and didn’t get it.

Just remember, the "best" or "better" rooms are very subjective terms. I really learned that when, just before a trip to WDW, I read someone's glowing report of the terrific room she had-she just loved it. Then surprisingly when I checked in a few days later, I got the same room. I practically skipped to the room, thinking I couldn't wait. Sadly, it didn't take long for me to realize that her "wonderful" room wasn't my idea of a great room at all.
Agree! One trip at to the Poly we were randomly assigned what TP says is the most requested DVC standard view studio (it is 39** - can't remember the exact number, in Tokelau at the end of the building). We didn't like the location and went back to the front desk to ask for a different room. They were a little surprised that we asked to be moved to an area they did not consider all that great.

It's still not a reason to get upset; it's just a room, and things happen. I never have known Disney not to try to make things right the best they can.
If they paid the points for a certain category, such as Theme Park view and did not get that category, I think upset is understandable. If it was simply a request like high floor, I agree there should not be an upset person. Disappointed, yes, upset, no.

I have know Disney to try and make it right 90% of the time when they should have made it right. And yes even sometimes when it wasn’t something they had an obligation to correct.

To add a data point, I get email yesterday that touring plans submitted my room request, so they are currently submitting but who knows what Disney does with it. Just to see and cover my bases, I emailed member services this AM with room request and received back just now that request noted on reservation. Both requests were for sunset savannah views at Kidani and we had booked savannah view. DW needs to see giraffes.

Still not going to get upset because the poor cast member you’re yelling at or giving attitude to had absolutely nothing to do with it. I’m disappointed, sure, but it’s just a room.

It happened to me twice on a cash reservation that I paid for a certain view and didn’t get it because, for whatever reason, the room was no longer available. I never took it out on the cast member, nor would I ever. You could tell that she was just waiting to get yelled but that's not me. I joked around and tried to get a bungalow room at the Poly but apparently by charm isn't that good. They made it right the best they could, and while it wasn’t exactly what I wanted, a silly room isn’t going to ruin my vacation.

Sounds like what used to happen when BW view was just a request. Back then it was easy to simply make them into a separate booking category. If this sort of thing happens regularly now, then limiting or eliminating requests indeed might be the solution.

No one said anything about yelling at the cast member being in any way acceptable. Being very upset is different than mistreating someone else.
