I have done the room request through touring plans. I was wondering if I should call Disney and put in a request also. Would that just be over kill? I tried to put in request with online check in but no options are available.

I just noticed on line request isn’t available too :confused3 I haven’t used TP requests yet. In the past I’ve used online request and have my requests noted on reservation.
This trip I put in a TP fax (but didn’t do room #) and have request noted on res. I think it’s fine to use 2 different notification systems as long as requests don’t conflict.

It appears the selection tab is broken, again. I called and put a request on my reservation with Disney. Also, requested an appropriate room with Touring Plans. I haven't been as lucky with Touring Plans as my daughter has. She's 2 for 2 and I'm 0 for 2.

Do you find you have better luck just calling Disney and giving them your requests?

In December that seemed to be the case. I went to the desk and she mentioned what I called in. The room was one of my two choices, but then I changed my mind and asked about a third choice. The CM was able to put me into choice number three. Seems I always go to the desk upon arrival and check things out.

I’ve used touring plans twice and I’m O for 2. However, last time I called Disney to note we would like a king bed on our Poly reservation and I did receive it. Probably all luck of the draw as in availability, who is assigning, who all they have assigned by the time they get to you, rather or not they read the fax, etc.

I agree with the post above maybe note on the reservation or using touring plans, but also go to the desk upon arrival.

I have only used TP once for a specific room at AKL .. standard room with bunkbed with a partial savanna view. There are probably only a hand full of that room type and I got it!

I used the TP fax request for our trip this past March. The online room preferences on Disney's site weren't working properly so I called in with my room requests as well. I'm not sure if one or the other or the combination of the two is the most effective, but we did get pretty close to the exact room requested through TP, just a few doors down.

We’ve used TP twice. For our last trip (just got home on Friday), I requested building 35 at OKW and a first floor unit. We ended up in building 34 on the first floor, a very nice renovated unit.

In February I asked for a specific room at BLT. We didn’t get it the first night, but were able to move to it for the rest of our trip after I asked a CM if it was available.

I have a “woods view or courtyard view” request for our October BRV trip with TP. However, we’re staying at CR club level for two nights beforehand. Since we’re already in a TPV room I requested directly through Disney; asked for an odd-numbered room. It’s not guaranteed, of course, but I’m hopeful.

I really feel that all requests are just luck of the draw. I personally have started using TP because of the ease and I don't have to remember to fax or call the resort myself to make requests. As indicated on TP, they start assigning rooms 5 days in advance and they send the fax then. I can make my requests with TP as far in advance as I want and know that they will send the fax on time. TP isn't perfect though--I noticed that some of the room views they give are messed up, upside down, sideways, etc. I'm also not sure that all of their views are listed correctly. At AKL they listed an obvious Savannah view room, by the picture they gave, as Standard view. Still, it's the best out there, that I can find anyway. Good luck--hopefully you won't be spending too much time in the room anyway.

I only used the service once but we got what we wanted. My TA had top floor listed on reservation. On the TP fax I requested “top floor, away from elevators to minimize foot traffic outside our room.” We got exactly that.

There's no reason to call too but if you want to, sure, by all means do so. As long as you do not give them anything that contradicts what you put on the TP request, there's no harm.
I never bother myself because calling is such a PITA. I avoid calling Disney's phone system unless absolutely necessary.

We used them once. We also called in the same request using the exact wording from our Touring Plans request. Requested nothing during online check in.

Got the most awesome room view ever at Poly!!!

We plan to use them again next trip. :)
