we'll be there midday in Aug so there is a good chance we wont see any/many animals
what should we check out though? whats the do not miss little details in the lobby/etc?
where is the public viewing sunset savannah balcony?

When you get there you can request a map of the resort at the front desk.

They have the largest collection of African art in North America, it's truly amazing. It's scattered through the hotel, DH and I spent about five hours one day walking around looking at it all. I don't think many people ever really give it a second glance, which is too bad because it's a wealth of historical and cultural information.

There are little nooks and crannies all over the hotel with viewing areas. As far as seeing animals mid-day, they will be there, just possibly not as active. They do tend to clean one savannah at a time, so while there might not be animals on one of the savannahs, there will be on others.

There is a lot to see in the large lobby itself. The gift shop is to the right as you first enter the lobby. There are displays throughout the lobby of African art. At the farther end of the lobby, on the left side, is a lounge with displays and a balcony area looking over one of the Savannahs with the people pens.

The main view area, Arusha Rock, is straight through the back of the lobby, but you can also see animals by walking out the wings of the hotel--there are windows occassionally off of the long hallways, and outdoor stairwells.

Back up in the lobby, the bar, and Boma and Jiko, are down the stairs to the right (as you enter the front doors). The pool is right outside of Boma. There is a playground next to the pool, and more animal viewing areas past the pool.
