All of my son's spelling words this week have "th" in them. Tonight's assignment is to put them into one of 3 categories: hard th, soft th, and hard t sound. For example, I'm guessing Thailand would be a hard th sound, right? Then what the heck is a hard t sound if all of the words have th in them? Is this a trick question? I told DS to hold off on that part of his homework until I figure it out.

Anyone?

I'd think a hard "th" would be for words like 'this' 'that' and a soft "th" would be for words like 'thin' and 'thistle' Then the hard "t" would be for 'Thailand'

Thailand is the hard T sound (the H is silent)

What are the other words?

Elaine, that makes sense...thanks. :) I knew that Thailand sounded like a T, but I couldn't figure out what would then be considered a hard th.

Thanks Mickeyfan too. :)

This is just a guess...

T would be Thailand because it sounds like a T.

The hard th would be the sounds where it is voiced(the, then...vocal chords vibrate)

The soft th would be the sounds where there is just air(thin this...no vocal chord vibration).

I just showed this thread to my son and he said, "oh yeah, that's it."

I thought I had a few more years before I had to research his homework. Waaaaah, I can only imagine what 5th grade will be like!

You are welcome, boy, there are some very smart people on the Did, I haven't been in 3rd grade for 40years!
