It's been a week since my left knee suddenly quit working. Very painful to put any weight on it, bend it, change position, etc. I went to the orthopedic urgent care the day after it started (on a weekend) where they took regular x-rays and said it looked normal (although my cartilege is worn on both knees but was told that was normal for my age).

So after a week of getting by with some pain pills, icing it, resting it as much as possible, I head back to the orthopedist tomorrow where I'm sure they'll order an MRI. Then I have a follow up with the dr. (tomorrow is the PA) in another week. That is putting me 2 weeks away from my trip to WDW.

I think it's ligament related (thanks, google) and with hardly any improvement after a week things aren't looking so hot for WDW. Guess I'll order up a scooter and hope there are enough hands to push the baby stroller. I'm used to being super active (walk 60 mins a day at home) and usually go-go-go at WDW, so this will be a change. Plus, I don't care for elevators and usually take the stairs. Oh well, so much for the pity party. Just want to say: I miss my knee!!

I understand where you are coming from! It is so frustrating suddenly being unable to do the things you are used to.

I hope you have a wonderful time at Disney regardless of your knee. Everything is so accessible that you should be able to do everything you want. Have a great time and good luck with the doctors!

Thank you for your kind words, they really lifted my spirits the other day when I read them. You are right, it will be wonderful trip no matter what!

Plus, after seeing the dr. yesterday, news was better than expected. There are a couple of fixes to try; this week it will be the less invasive version which might do the trick. My walking ability is already tons better today.

I'm so sorry for you, and I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers. You've been so kind to us on our trips to HHI, this just doesn't seem fair. Perhaps you need some rest and relaxation vacation time-my prescription!

Oh thanks!!! I had planned to BE in Hilton Head right now until this came about. What I really need is a prescription for turning back old age ailments. :rotfl:

Lesson learned: I'll never again take my knees for granted. They are very useful. Going up and down stairs. Letting you bend over to find the baking dish you need. Helpful to be able to sit on the potty. Good for jumping up to get the phone when it rings. Letting you walk to the mailbox, or through the store when you're out of milk. Necessary for a good night's sleep if you prefer to sleep in any position other than flat on your back.

Feel the love with your knees people.... They are wonderful when they work!!!!

I hurt my knee while playing volleyball in high school, but didn't actually feel the injury until I got out of the car and twisted just the right way. When that happened my knee popped and locked. I had difficulty walking on it, sleeping and just generally doing anything that required walking or weight bearing. I saw my primary care doctor when I got home from vacation (I was at my aunts house) and he thought I tore my meniscus and a piece got stuck between two knee ligaments causing the locking (I couldn't fully straighten my knee). I had an MRI and sure enough I had torn my medial meniscus (the cushion between leg bones on the inside of the knee) and had to have surgery for it. I didn't let my knee injury keep me from having a good time at Disneyland. I was able to rent a manual wheelchair (I couldn't get an ECV since I wasn't 18) for my trip and had a great time. Now that I have a Spinal Cord Injury I of course take my own chair to the parks. I recently suffered a stress fracture of my left hand, so I am having a hard time pushing my chair. I am going to DLR on Saturday and a friend is going to push me in my chair. I thought about renting an ECV, but I want to stay in my custom manual chair because of the good seat cushion and backrest that I have specifically for me and MY needs.
Definitely don't let a bum knee keep you from having a good time at WDW. You deserve a vacation, and time to relax. Rent an ECV from offsite if you need to...but most importantly, HAVE FUN!!!

 I completely understand.

A few years ago, I tore my ACL while jumping on the trampoline with my kids. A few weeks later I had ACL surgery using a hamstring graft. I'm normally a very active mom of 4 and to be sidelined for such a long time just killed me. But I learned some valuable lessons. First, like you said, never take your health for granted. You don't know what you've got until it's gone!! Second, I learned to be more patient. It was a long recovery and I wanted to be better NOW. I had to learn to be patient and not to push myself so hard. Third, I learned that I needed to be better at accepting help. I've always been very self-reliant and it was just painful to have to ask for help. But I did ask for and receive help from family and friends and it was just such a wonderful blessing. I truly hope you can find the little blessings like I did.

So hang in there! :goodvibes Keep us updated on your MRI results. I hope you're feeling better really soon.
