Total lunar eclipse Aug 28th

At this point, the moon was quickly setting, and my view was becoming obstructed by trees. I went around to the front of the house (realizing I should have been there the whole time , but then the light made it too tough to get a decent shot. Gonna try and crop some later. That pesky work thing getting in my way again...

While my pics aren't award winners, I'm proud of them. They were shot with the Rebel XTi. A couple of them were taken on basic mode, 'no flash'. After that I set it to either aperture priority or depth of field priority. The best shots were at 5.6 aperture, and about a 4 second shutter speed. I was set up on a tripod, and after a few blurred shots, I actually figured out (unbelievable for me at that crazy hour) to use the self timer for the rest of them. Need to invest in a cable shutter release.

Would love to see more, especially from the west coast who was able to get the second half!

I woke up about 20 minutes before it was supposed to start, got out to the biggest, emptiest place around to see the sky. But I couldn't see th eeclipse. The combination of the early sunrise out here and clouds (only in the spot the eclipse was occuring) made it impossible to see, let alone photograph. Thanks for showing me what I missed though!

Thanks for the kind words! Other than having 2 of the 50+ shots I took this morning turn out so well, my biggest accomplishment was finding all my Canon S3 buttons in the dark! I used manual mode so I could adjust shutter and aperture since I had no idea which combination would work the best, found the manual focus button so I could set that to infinity, even got the tripod set up, all in the dark.

Anyway, lest anyone think I'm some great photographer (in my dreams!), here's the shot that had the best exposure (at least I think so), but it came out blurry. It was a 15 sec exposure and I used a tripod, so I don't know why it blurred; if it had been sharp, this would have been a great shot!

Amy - the blur is due to the movement of the moon - remember it is rotating around the earth and the earth is rotating around the sun so it isn't a static object. I used to know the longest exposure you could take without movement showing but it escapes me right now. 15 seconds is definitely too long.

But, nice job on your eclipse photos!

I used to know the longest exposure you could take without movement showing but it escapes me right now. 15 seconds is definitely too long.

Aha! So I can blame the moon!! (Actually, now that I look at it, the tree doesn't look blurry, just the moon, so you're prob. right.) Never mind that I could have upped the ISO to 400 or even 800, I don't recall the aperture but I could probably have opened it up a stop or two, and then I could have used a little slower shutter. But we're talking about 5:52 am, BEFORE I HAD MY COFFEE!!!!

I'm up early for work everyday so today I got up just a bit earlier than normal and got to work a bit later. Found a great spot just south of Boston. Those in the Greater Boston area may have heard of Granite Links Golf Course in Quincy (behind Mr Tux at the Furnice Brook Pkwy exit). GREAT view of Boston and I've been there before for sunrise pics and got keeper that is enlarged to 12x18 hanging in our hall. Anyway I'm in the process of downloading my pics as I got home just a short time ago. I'm not completely sure I got anything real good.

I got there just after the start and was able to stay for about 50 minutes. No possible way to view the full eclipse because the moon was setting and then some clouds came in way off in the West.

I should have some shortly.

What time did you get out? I was our at 5:15 and didn't see a thing all morning until finally going in at 6:15.

I set the alarm to wake up early. Unfortunately it was total cloud cover and it was already fairly light outside here.

I love the shots that you folks got!

Ben, I got to Granite Links around 510 or so. Very nice view. The moon was low in the western sky. I could see it all the way down 93s into Boston. Very cool view from the Zakim or if one was up for it, the Longfellow Bridge. It was pretty clear looking west down the Charles.

Here are 4 that came out best. I croped them down from a 6.1MP file to less than 1MB. Also sharpened some of them, which in turn added more noise. Oh well. Maybe next time I'll have a 500mm lens.

All taken with my Nikon D50 and Nikkor 70-300mm lens at the 300mm end.

This one was at 5:17am, 1/400, f/5.6, ISO 1600 Hand held

Next was at 5:33am, 1/50, f/5.6, ISO 1600 Handheld

Next was at 5:40am, 1/3, f/5.6, ISO 400 tripod

Last was at 5:42am, 1.3 sec, f/5.6, ISO 400 tripod

You can see on the last 2 shots the clouds that were rolling in. After I took the last one I got another that you can barely see the outline of the moon. Then I waited about 10 minutes thinking that the clouds would pass, but they didn't and the moon was getting very low on the horizon and would have set in a few more minutes anyway.

great shots you guys! I'm so jealous. I set the alarm for 4:30. Sprang out of bed, grabbed the camera and stood in the middle of the backyard, in my jammies, going "where is it?!" There was way too much cloud here...didn't get to see a thing

Boy, my shots are nowhere near as good as everyone elses, but here is what it looked like here in Australia. This was about 7-8pm last night, right outside my front door! Unfortunately the moon seemed to be further away than I thought, plus I have some street lights glaring up either side!!
Still, for what they are worth...

They are all hand held as I haven't got a tripod yet - still on the shopping list! And don't even ask me what settings - I think I tried most on the good old night snapshot as I couldn't see a thing!!!
