Has anyone tried Tortuga Tavern? The menu looks the same or similar to El Pirata that it replaced. Is it just a name change or has it changed otherwise? I'm hoping it's open more often, we never seemed to be there when El Pirata was open the past few years. Thank you!

It appears to be just a name change, although I'm definitely expecting it to be open more often now. It's directly associated with the Pirates movie franchise now (or at least that's the reference people will make), and I think they added a painting of a character from PoTC4, so I expect it'll become more popular.

I got this on Wednesday:

Burrito - chicken or beef - with cilantro rice and black beans

I got the beef version.

It was gross.

When they handed me the tray, I thought that it had not been cleaned because there was brown glop on it. I thought it was chocolate frosting from a previous guest.

When I opened the burrito to add taco sauce, I realized that the brown glop was actually bean glop. The Burrito was mostly filled with bean glop. When I bit into it, all I could taste was beans. You couldn't taste the beef at all.

I do not recommend it.

Someone posted the new menu & they got rid of the tacos.....
That's too bad because everytime we go in September they are closed & this year we are going in June & DH really wanted to eat the ever so popular tacos:sad1:

I believe the menu is all burritos & taco salad....

Oh this is bad news! We ate there during the renovation- bad move- it was all tarpy and was the same temp as Davy Jones meat locker. I don't know what we were thinking- I assumed that menu was just a temporary thing- the brown glop was very much in evidence. Bring back the tacos!

We were there a few weeks ago and thought it was good. DS25 had the taco salad and was relieved when they didn't pour the 'goopy' cheese on it. He likes the shredded cheese at the toppings bar. Said it was the best thing he had at CS. I had the beef nachos. They were good but could have used some more meat. Had naked chips towards the end. DDIL got the kids cheese
quesadilla. She ate breakfast we did not! They had the tacos the 1st week of March.

The menu was changed awhile back to take off the tacos, just burritos, nachos and taco salad. Although there are a couple of reports that they might now have tacos again.

We ate there last year when it was still El Pirata. I thought it was pretty good. We plan on eating there again this year. It was a nice change from the cheeseburger madness.

I would really like to try it, assuming they are open more than a couple of hours a week.

Strangely, the overload of beans would suit me fine as I would have asked them to leave the beef out anyway. I am staying optimistic and don't want to believe it can be that bad. They haven't been open that long have they? Perhaps they are still having some 'teething problems'

We ate there in April of last year when it was still El Pirate. We thought it was really good.

I'm hoping to try it again when we go in October. I was happy to see that they just renamed it & didn't get rid of it. I get tired of hamburgers & chicken strips. This was nice for something different.

Does anyone know if you can get salad dressing for the taco salad? The salad was good last time but it was a little dry. I'm hoping this would fix it.

We ate lunch here on Tuesday. I thought it was really good! We got a vegetarian burrito (huge! but not really a burrito, just a folded over giant tortilla with rice, beans and veggies inside)--plenty for 2 people, beef nachos (yummy and plenty of beef, also enough to share) and sad little child's cheese quesidilla. It was so tiny, but the cheese was really tasty! I can't remember if it was one or two.

The toppings bar had shredded cheese, diced tomatoes, shredded lettuce and salsa. I would definitely eat here again. I don't think they had tacos, just the taco salad.

I ate there when it was El Pirata and I am hoping that it is going to be open more often. Because I am diabetic, I frequently order the kids meal to get the smaller portion sizes when I do QS. And the cheese quesadilla made a nice change from chicken!

NOTE: The Tavern is simply the El Pirata renamed. At this review,
the menu has not changed. It appears that WDW is trying to take the
advantage of the Pirates them to make a poor eatery more popular. The
food is still not that good tasting. If it were not for ABC Commissary,
this could be the worst eatery on WDW property.

Blech! I'm glad I stumbled upon this thread. I was actually looking forward to Tortuga, since it wasn't just burgers and fries, but I don't do refried beans and definitely don't want to sacrifice quality for the sake of variety!

Loved the old tacos. They seriously seemed bigger and better than tacos anywhere else. I am disappointed to hear they are off the menu. Hopefully there will be enough requests for the tacos to bring them back.

The kid's cheese quesadillas were good, but no longer enough for DS (he's a Disney Adult now anyway).

Hope the name change does mean they intend to be open more often.

Will try the new menu in May, hopefully. We arrive the day of the POTC4 release so hopefully pirate fever will be in full swing.

does anyone know for sure if tacos have been taken off the menu?? We were going to eat here in May because of the tacos but if they are off them men u I am going to eat at paco bills.

Mmm bean glop:rotfl:
Sorry, it does sound gross. How disappointing-I was hoping to try it this time, maybe we'll give it a miss-is the Mexican CS at epcot better or is it more bean glop?;)

The 3/11 menu on allearsnet has tacos listed but the description says a corn tortilla...so it sounds like they have soft corn tortillas, not hard taco shells. I'm not a big fan of corn tortillas...I hope they bring back the taco shells...which would be great if the meat filling is also gluten free for my DD.
