Toronto Island airport to Orlando and Los Angeles

Porter wants to start flying to Disney Word and Disneyland. I sure would appreciate more affordable airfare and the convenience of an $8 cab ride or even a walk (I'm downtown) to the airport.

Not sure if Porter would be able to compete with my $720 direct flights including taxes and bags out of Buffalo for 4 people (!), but with their regular 50% off sales, maybe they could come close enough to sway me away from Buffalo.

Wow! $720 for 4! I find that Southwest was pricier this past Winter out of Buffalo. I missed a great deal they had on Black Friday, but on the whole I find prices have increased. I remember a few years back, going via AirTran for $49 each way! Less than $500 for the 3 of us.

The only problem is right now a per the agreement with the city of Toronto, the port authority and the federal government they can not fly jets into or out of the island airport. Yeah, I wouldn't hold my breath on this one. They can't do a thing about buying the jets until the new runways are approved. And getting city, provincial and federal approval to change the existing restrictions is going to be an extremely difficult (not to mention lengthy) process.

Fingers crossed that this happens ... It would open up new travel options for the Northern communities served by Porter. Buffalo is great but the 12+ hour drive to get there isn't always fun or feasible, and I would much rather connect at ytz than yyz.

Obviously since you're from Northern Ontario you may not know all the issues about. There are many people living in condos on the harbourfront of Toronto, plus the residences of the Toronto Island itself. None of them want Jets flying in front of their homes. If you lived close enough to see an airport from your front window you wouldn't want jets either.

I live is mississauga and I would love to see Billy Bishop get jets! As for living next to an airport we're 10Km from YYZ, I'm used to the noise, kinda comforting.

Supposedly, the jets they want to purchase emit the same noise levels as their current fleet. No idea how true that is. I live overlooking the waterfront and I can see the island airport from my home. There are many unanswered questions at this point. Provided the noise levels don't increase and there aren't additional concerning pollution levels to deal with, I could be convinced to agree with their proposals. I have a lot of questions though.

Actually I live on the take-off / landing route for our municipal airport ... while I can't see the airport from my house, the low flying turbo props and Porter jets are very much visible throughout the day, and the late night arrivals and early morning departures are my reminders that I should be asleep / or that it's almost time to get up for work. It's part of daily life, just like the Northlander train's whistle when it used to come through town.

That said, I completely understand the concerns that arise when major changes will likely impact your place of residence. Right now, a major mining company plans to start an operation almost literally in my backyard. Am I happy about this? No, not really, but I know once the proper authorities give the all-clear on permits and such, the project will likely go ahead because of the economic benefits to municipality as a whole. (In my case, it's the reality of living in a mining town; for others, it's the reality of living near an airport.)

If significant noise / pollution issues will not arise due to Porter's proposal, I think economic benefits to the major players will likely prevail in the end. I can't imagine Porter would make such an announcement if they weren't reasonably sure that they could make things work.

Yeah same here I just don't really see why Porter was allowed to start using the island airport in the first place. It should just be shut down.

The Island A/P was there a lot longer than the condo's that dot the lakeshore.
If you don't want the noise of airplanes ..why move there?
Where we move to is a choice that should consider all factors and up to us to determine if we can accept them.

My mom lives about a mile from the threshold of runway 30 in Regina. When planes land there they fly in directly over the house and the jets are very loud. She's been there since 1971. You get used to it. Mom and dad knew what we were getting into when they bought the house - if you're moving to a location near an airport you should expect air traffic.

It becomes quite a talking point when you're having a BBQ in the back yard with someone who's never been to the house before. You can hear a plane as it approaches and just before it clears the house they often ask "how low are they?". It's fun to watch their eyes bug out when they see how low the plane does get.

The airport itself had been closed for a while when some of the newer condos got built. Most Torontonians are not really a fan of the airport in general and see it as an eye sore on the waterfront. Expanding it for the use of jets just makes it even more of one.
