Tornado Damage In Indiana/Kentucky

I'm watching news coverage of the tornado damage from last night's tornados in Indiana and Kentucky. I hope that no DIS people were affected by the storms. So far, there are eleven confirmed dead and several hundred injured. While my head tells me that these things just happen, my heart tells me that we've done something to anger Mother Nature. So many terrible tragedies lately.

It's in Evansville. I don't know any other info, just the local weather guy said something on the way to commercial.

OMG, I haven't even had the TV on yet this morning. I do know though, that here in Central Illinois we had a pretty intense thunderstorm with some major lightening last night! It had me a little bit scared! And in November! I'm going to turn the news on now.

From the damage I've seen, I think they might notch that up later to an F4. Terrible damage. It happened during the night, so people had no warning.

A tornado expert said that states like Arkansas, Kentucky, Indiana, etc. should expect more nighttime tornados throughout the winter months. He said something about weather patterns. Not good.

Last night I was talking to Titus on the phone (long time DIS'ers may remember him, he is an ex-bf of my dd's that spent a year in Iraq and received a lot of support from DIS'ers) and he was driving through that area. He kept talking about how bad the weather was and how he hoped he didn't run into any tornados. I wonder what he thought when he got up this morning and saw this on the news.

I just read that it's up to 18 dead with over 200 injured. They said tornado hit about 2:00 a.m. so even though the alarms sounded about 10 minutes before it hit, most were sleeping and probably didn't hear them. So sad.

A real shame.

We have a weather alert radio in our bedroom just for that fact. Always alerts us of impending weather.

Hey everyone. I live about 15-20 minutes away from where this tornado touched down. I got off from work about 1am and on my way home I saw lightning and the wind was getting bad. I got home, turned on the TV and the weathermen were going nuts. Thn suddenly the weather here went crazy. at 2am the sirens went off and the winds picked up here. Luckily it missed Owensboro.

They are saying 16 dead and more than 200 injured. Tornado started in Western Kentucky near the river in Henderson, following a straight path to the northeast ripped through a horse racing track (million of dollars in damage, several horses killed and many more missing), then a mobile home park was just leveled, the ground footage shows what looks like very little damage...but the arial footage shows all the concrete slabs from the mobile homes that have simply been erased.

I am still trying to get a hold of some friends of mine in the area and I am thankful that I had to work late last night, otherwise I would have been with some friends in that area last night. This is crazy. Keep the area in your prayers (Henderson, Evansville, Newburgh)

We live a couple of hours away but had a lot of wind too. Luckily, nothing too major close that we know of. We used to live in Owensboro and they really do watch the weather pretty closely when it is necessary. Glad to hear that you fared well Jungle Skipper. Prayers to all others affected.

Does anyone know if there are any main road closures through Henderson and Evansville due to the damage. My SIL is supposed to go from Paducah, KY to Evansville tomorrow morning for business.

Checking in from just north of Lexington. We had storms and alot of wind around 6 this morning, but no damage here. Nothing like the catastrophe near Evansville and south of Elizabethtown. Our thoughts and prayers are with those in the western part of the state. aw: aw: aw: aw:

I know we woke up very early this morning to a very intense thunder/lightening storm and pouring rain, but no idea about the tornado until about noon today. These things are always sad, but when it hits this close to home it makes it worse.

Tornados scare me much more than hurricanes do. At least with a hurricane, you have SOME sort of warning, even if the path or intensity changes. These tornados just come out of nowhere! One passed through about 5 blocks from my house a few years ago. Luckily, I was awake and noticed the air getting "green" so was able to herd my children into the downstairs bathroom. (Our safe room) We didn't have any damage, but were without power for a few days.

First of all, to DISers in that area.

Dan Murphy's idea about a weather radio is an excellent one. We have tsunami sirens here, and a lot of times, when they run the monthtly drill, I barely hear the siren. Especially when you are sleeping, it is hard to hear things. Stay safe.

The damage and the devastation is just awful. With 8 minutes warning, there was little that many people could do. My heart always goes out to those in the tornado zones because there is only so much preparation one can do. Ct. had a severe tornado 25 years ago and we still talk about it.

When we lived in Kansas City, we had a weather radio. It was set to give off an alarm anytime there was severe weather expected in our county. We also had sirens in the area, but they were very hard to hear if the windows were closed. I would encourage everyone to get a weather radio if you live in an area prone to tornados. I got mine at the local grocery store for $30. I passed it on to the people who bought my house.

How horrible. I have been watching the news today and praying that the survivors will be able to find some peace after such a tragedy.

I agree that this is a good illustration of the need for everyone to have a functioning weather alert radio. We have a good one that was pretty inexpensive and has been very easy to program and use.

I think the Weather Channel offers a free service where it will automatically call your home phone or cell phone if there is a warning issued for your area. That would be an alternative for those who don't want to buy an alert radio.

I can't tell what areas of Evansville this happened in. I lived there (off Green River) in `95-`96. My now husband lived in Henderson so I drove past Ellis Park just about everyday.

Jungle Skipper, I was wondering about the Owensboro area, thanks for the update. In-law's in-laws live outside of there.

I didn't realize until a little while ago exaclty where it touched down. We have friends who live in Newburgh!!! I just left a message on their cell phone as no one picked up. I pray to God they made out okay. I asked them to please call or email when they get a chance to let us know they are ok. How very tragic.
Please keep us posted here. Where can I look other than CNN to get updates? I have their address, as we went to visit them 3 yrs ago there. Does anyone know?
