I know that I can cruise (for now, anyway) with just my birth certificate but it's time that I got my passport.

I have my original, long form birth certificate, but it has gotten torn from folding/unfolding many times. I have the top and bottom.

If I tape it together, can I get my passport?

Since you have both pieces I don't see why not.

I think that's a question for a Passport Acceptance Office. You can just go in and ask them.

I wouold suppose if its legible, yeah they'd accept it. Just go to a post office or something, you know?

There's not an office near me. :headache:
Well crap, does the post office count?

We have used the post offices near us because the only other option in our area is a local government office that has convenient hours of 9 - 3 Mon - Fri when we are working.

You can order a new birth certificate. Search online for the county offices in the community you were born. I have had to order new from the county clerk in different counties for myself, DH, kids, etc. Not expensive - usually under $10.

Wow $10? WA and CA certified birth certs are $20 and $25 respectively!

OP if you live in driving distance of the county of your birth, you could see if you could just get a new certified copy as a walk-in. Pretty easy if you live closeby.

Aside from the torn part, just be sure the Certificate has been issued by the State and is "certified"

The closest passport office is a two hour drive. The post office had no idea if the passport agency would accept it or reject it torn.

I ordered the long form. For me it cost $15. I also paid extra to have it expedited. I ordered it around 6:00 p.m. Wednesday evening and by about 2:00 Thursday I had an email telling me they had shipped it already. I paid about $50 total for the form, expediting and shipping.

Thanks everyone for your responses!
