San Francisco
Charleston, SC
New York City
Santa Fe, NM
Chicago
Carmel, CA
Honolulu, Oahu
Savannah, GA
San Diego
Sedona, AZ

They are places that I would want to visit. I would put Boston and Washington DC in there somewhere.

Is this your list? What did you use as your criteria? Just curious.

added

Boston
Seattle
Denver
Austin

...just searching the internet...

I also give a vote for Boston, went there last year and love it love it love it!!! Never realized the history in Boston, not sure if it is because i am Canadian or was just unaware but a great fun city...........

Part of me thinks that Philadelphia should be on the list.

Lots of history in that city.
I've personally only ever seen their horrible airport...

I agree about New York City I really want to go there. What about Los Angeles or is that just me?

OK, so you've added Austin, Boston, Denver and Seattle. But I share Suejai's curiosity - what are your criteria? It seems that every city in the list has something of scenic or touristic value, places where you could imagine going for a few days just to tour around, absorbing the atmosphere.

But if that is the criteria, why in the world do you not include Atlanta, Baltimore, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans and Philadelphia? Many of these have lots of historically important attractions, and Las Vegas, Miami and New Orleans are great places to visit for special reasons of their own.

And any list of "Top US cities to visit" put on the Disboards surely should include not only LA, but also Orlando, shouldn't it? :yay:

I'm not sure about including Orlando. Is there actually much to see in Orlando itself? In a way, most of us seem to head to an all-inclusive or two (like WDW) and I bet that few actually go into Orlando.

I like the list but would add San Antonio, New Orleans and Washington DC.

Ooh... Charleston, SC is oh so nice! :thumbsup2

I am going to add Burlington, VT... in the winter, you ski! In the summer, there is Lake Champlain, Green Mountain... :thumbsup2

From where I have been so far my list would be in this order -

San Francisco
New York
Boston
Santa Barbara
Washington DC
Philadelphia
Salt Lake City
Las Vegas
Denver
Los Angeles

I would like to go to the following cities to see how my top 10 would change!

Seattle
Chicago
Houston
Charleston
Savannah
Honolulu
San Diego
New Orleans

Oh and have so many smaller places that I have visited and loved.

I've always enjoyed visiting Washington DC. I find something new there on each visit.:goodvibes

I've only been to 4 cities on that list, and live right outside NYC, and I think that list was printed somewhere recently. I remember being very surprised that DC wasn't on the list, as well as Boston (both cities I enjoyed). I was only in Philly for a weekend for a dance competition, but was underwhelmed - I'll have to try it again, but I'm surprised it didn't make the cut.

I would keep Chicago, San Francisco, New York City, Charleston, Honolulu, & San Diego. But what about the other great cities to visit in the United States... what about Boston, Los Angeles, Miami, Seattle, Las Vegas, New Orleans, St. Augustine, Washington DC, & Philadelphia.

Is Ohau the 51st State? :confused3

ETA: I agree about NYC. It is amazing between Thanksgiving and Christmas. We've gone at that time and in the summer and I would pick that time over summer any day.

I would add:

New Orleans
Las Vegas
Baltimore
Houston
Minneapolis
Washington, DC
Fort Lauderdale
Seattle
Philadelphia

I would remove Charleston...I see it almost everyday and its nothing special...Key West, Miami, Gatlinburg, New Orleans, Chicago, St. Louis, San Diego, Vegas, DC would be my list

OP was asking DISers for their opinion, and not what various studies show. But those studies might still provide food for thought.

According to a Forbes Traveler study of what cities are visited most often (and they have a complicated way of calculating this; http://www.forbestraveler.com/best-lists/most-visited-us-cities-story.html ), the thirty most visited cities in the U.S. are (in order, from the top)

Las Vegas
Los Angeles
Orlando
New York
Chicago
Washington DC
Atlanta
San Diego
Houston
Dallas

Philadelphia
Phoenix
Anaheim
San Francisco
Miami
Boston
San Antonio
St Louis
Tampa Bay
Minneapolis - St Paul

Seattle
Indianapolis
Detroit
Austin
Denver
Charlotte
Nashville
Kansas City
Fort Lauderdale and
Baltimore.

Another take: Forbes also listed the "Ten most popular" and "Ten least popular" cities to live in (which, of course, is very different from the cities you would most like to visit. http://www.forbes.com/2009/01/29/cities-top-ten-lifestyle-real-estate_0129cities.html - and for a longer list, see http://pewresearch.org/pubs/1096/community-satisfaction-top-cities). The most popular were Denver, San Diego, Seattle, Orlando and Tampa, while the least popular were Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Minneapolis and Kansas City. Go figure.

Here's another vote for BOSTON! :cool1:
