Top Chef All Stars: LA

This is one thing I didn't understand. Every season including early on in this one, the judges always say "one note". Melissa's food was probably excellent but I was getting tired of the asian enfusion she continually did.

I finally put my finger on why I had not been a Bryan Voltaggio fan before this season. His brother! I *always* disliked Michael and that dislike carried over to Bryan. Speaking of which, did anyone else think that Micheal looked very sick? He was always thin, but looked very gaunt and skeletal.
It looks like he fell off the wagon. I saw him on a tattoo show too and he looks strung out.

I was very happy with the top 3! It was a great season.

It's a funny thing. All the chefs this season had a signature style, but when your style relies partially on ethnic cooking, you tend to get called out more because it's different. We saw this in Top Chef Texas, where chefs complained that Bev "only cooked Asian", nevermind that she cooked styles from all over East and Southeast Asia, and that she wasn't doing something like constantly cooking scallops.

With that said, we actually didn't see much complaining this season, and I think it's in part because the chefs really tried to use their styles as the starting point, and elevate what they were doing. But because Melissa's signature style has roots in HK/Cantonese cooking, it still stands out to the viewer and maybe the judges, relative to cooks that have styles based in the usual French/Italian/New American cuisine.

Ugh, the link cut off a period, meaning it doesn't work. in the actual wiki article, fan favourite was listed in the second paragraph.

Enough trying to be clever though. Winner was
Melissa
