tooth question - cold sensitivity with temporary crown

I went to the dentist Monday morning to have a tooth (lower molar) prepped for my very first crown.

It felt pretty good all week but I just ate lunch and had a large glass of ice cold tea with it and when that cold tea hit the tooth with the temporary crown it "lit my eyes up" a bit (to borrow an expression from my dentist).

I don't know if I've been subconsciously protecting it from cold and this is just the first time I've let anything cold hit it or if it's new. I don't have any problems when chewing and I've been chewing on it since day one because they told me I could eat normally right away (after the Novocain wore off, of course! ).

Since this is my first experience with having crown work done I was just wondering if this is normal.

Yes, that is normal. I am speaking from experience as opposed to from a professional view point. And if my memory serves me correctly - once the permanent one is in - it takes a little while (read a month or two) until the cold/hot temperatures seem normal again.

Yes, I remember well - no ice cream, frozen yogurt, or pop with ice, or cold milk. clh2 is correct that it'll take about a month after the crown for you to feel back to normal again.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I've been protecting it without realizing it and today I had an eye-opener!

BrerMom - I feel like an expert on fillings and having teeth rebuilt with fillings. I *know* those are cold sensitive for awhile. Should have figured this would be too.

I had just the opposite experience. I had a deteriorating filling that was sensitive to cold, and was difficult to chew with. One night while eating a sandwich, the filling gave way, and my tooth broke. Got my first ever temp crown a week or two later, and it was instantly an improvement over the old filling/tooth. When I got my permanent crown, I think the dentist said wait a day or so before chewing ice, but after that, it's all good. Had I known how much better I'd feel with the crown, I'd have had that work done long ago.

Aprille, I had a temp crown done last Friday, and mine too is sensitive to cold. It sure is a shock when you first discover it!
