Not the best Christmas I've ever had!

Had a root-canal filling done on Monday and have been in pain ever since. I expected some discomfort but the pain has been getting worse - not better. I phoned NHS Direct yesterday PM and she gave me the number for an emergency dentist today or, alternatively said I could go to A&E if I couldn't bear waiting another 24 hours. She pretty much diagnosed an abscess over the phone.

So, at about 9pm on Christmas Evening myself and DH are sitting in A&E. I was prescribed Amoxycillin which I started taking last night and I am dosed up to the eyeballs with Paracetomol/Codeine and Ibuprofen as well as rinsing regularly with warm salt water.

Has anyone got any other tips to alleviate the pain until the antibiotics kick in, which I'm hoping will be later on today, or is that wishful thinking?!

Was supposed to be having lots of family round today which I've had to cancel and have already started thinking about next Christmas to make up for this rotten one!

Hope you've all had/are having a much nicer time than me!

Joanne, you have my complete sympathy, my mum has been in the same pain all over Christmas as well, she went to the doctors Christmas Eve, as her dentist was closed and like you was given Amoxycillin and strong pain relief until she can get to the dentist. However I dont think there is anything the dentist can do until the absess is gone.

I just spoke to her now and for the first time in 48 hours it is starting to ease, so keep taking the antibiotics and pain relief and Im sure you will see some improvment soon:hug:

Thanks Sue. Send my best wishes to your Mum please, it is such an unbearable, uncomfortable pain and I'm glad to hear she is now starting to feel better.

Thanks Joanne, mum has been in tears with it, so I know how you must be feeling, she could get no relief whatsoever to start with, I hope you feel much better soon:hug:

I really really really, feel sorry for you both. When i was in the army i was plauged by absceses. Like you they generally reared their ugly head at or around christmas. One time i begged a dentist to do something, and as with you he said that the antibiotics, and pain killers would kick in, but they did'nt. He eventually agreed to drill a small hole at the back of my tooth and drained the abscess. That was just a great feeling. Another time coming home on leave on a train, i could physically see the abscess getting bigger and bigger, and was in so much pain that i jabbed it with a pin. It exploded and again the relief was just heaven.

What else can i say but my heart goes out to you both, i know the pain your in, and other than going through it youself its pretty hard to explain to people just how much it bloody hurts :sad1:

Hope you manage to get some relief tonight Joanne

and

hope your mum feels better soon too Sue

Ouuuuuch you poor thing, I can sympathise with you I had one about a month ago and it was awful the pain was unbearable, it took about 2 days for the ABs to kick in and before I could have any sleep:sad2: , I do hope you are feeling much better now:hug:

Thanks everyone.

The swelling is now immense, you can visibly see the abscess through the gum and half of my bottom lip is now really swollen up too. I started taking the amoxycillin christmas night and the pain isnt as bad today so hopefully they are now taking effect.

Any ideas how long the swelling should be up for? I daren't go outside the house, it's that grotesque. My children (8 and 6) reckon they can't see anything which means they must see me like this all the time!

Hope you are feeling better Joanne (and your Mum is Sue). Perhaps you can get to a dentist today to see if there is anything he/she can do to ease it.

Glad to hear you are a little better today  .x.

Back to the dentist for me tomorrow:sad2: Anti-biotics will have finished then and unless there is a miracle overnight, they haven't cleared it completely. The abscess is still there although the majority of the pain has subsided.

Have had to cancel plans to go to a friend's NYE party on Wednesday, I think I'll just be seeing in 2009 with a J20!
