Tonight while coming out of VBS dressed in a komono and platform japanese shoes my one foot slid sideways in the shoe and I fell full weight on my right knee on the parking lot. (our VBS is a japanese theme hence the komono and shoes) The knee is painful, swollen and I cant bend it or put full weight on it. I am not a thin lady so full weight was a lot. I cannot for the life of me remember if it's ice first and then heat after a certain point or heat first and then ice. Anyone know? I have a brace on it right now and if its not any better in the morning I will go to my doctor.

Ice reduces inflammation and heat helps with stiffness. You probably want to use an ice bag right now to reduce the swelling. I hope you feel better soon.:sunny:

remember R.I.C.E

Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation
That's you easy to remeber guide for sprains, etc.

Vince the paramedic just came home...........

If during the first two days, ice, to reduce or prevent swelling, that can occur during that time period. After that, heat, to help loosen it up.

Would you call your doctor in the morning and get it xrayed, please? You could have fractured the top portion of your tibia (tibial plateau), patella, or tore some ligaments in your knee.

Keep it elevated and iced through the night and take some Motrin for inflammation and pain. Please talk to your doctor, okay?

Don't forget to breath slowly into a paper bag. And remember, in case of an emergency your seat cushion can be used as a flotation device.

Thanks everyone. I took some Advil last night and iced it a bit. Its still very painful this morning and bruised but not quite as swollen. Just to be on the safe side I will call my doctor today and see if he can take a look at it.

Jeff I wasnt panicking at all. I asked a question because I couldnt remember how it went with ice and heat. Panicking would have been running to the ER and I didnt do that.

Proper icing technique is 20 mins on and 40 mins off for three hours. Longer icing can do tissue damage. Does it hurt to
move it? Does it hurt with weight on it? I've gotten really bad
contusions on both knees that later caused those areas to be
numb for a long time. Sorry you are hurt. Best to have it looked
at today in case there is something you should/can do.
Feel better!

I just wanted to say that I hope your knee is better soon!! Take care!!

Ice for 24 - 48 hours. It reduces swelling. Most swelling will take place within 24 hours.

Then moist heat. Heat increases circulation to the area and helps speed recovery.

Good luck.

As someone who broke & dislocated her kneecap on Easter morning, I say get to the dr!!

I had no clue my kneecap was broken until the orthopeadic surgeon saw it on the x-ray (the er dr completely missed it!)

Good luck - I hope you're not in too much pain.

Wait, breathing into a paper bag is for panicking? No wonder that didn't work when I pulled my hamstring. I swear, with so many different remedies a guy almost has to go to school to learn what to do for different injuries.

Feel better. I'd go to the doctor today if you can though, in case there is any damage.

 take care.

Karen-
Hope it's nothing serious. Take care of yourself and feel better soon.

Just wanted to say hope you are feeling better and get a good report from the dr. We are doing that same vbs and they want us to dress up too. I will draw the line at the kimono and maybe reeboks since I have alot of balance issues anyway that they know about. :sunny: Thoughts for you.

Hope its nothing serious, please update us when you find out.

Karen, I hope you are feeling better and that it is nothing truly serious

Stop in more often too... truly miss you not being around!

I went to the doctor today and had an xray done. I have soft tissue damage, bruising and swelling and it should be better in about a week. WHEW!!! I could have done so much more damage than I did the way I fell.

I did do VBS tonight and did dress up in the komono but left my sneakers on. Looked really interesting with the straight leged limp I have right now. LOL!

Thank you for all your thoughts, prayers and wishes.
