My Southern California AP expires in September, but I want to go Premium.

Am I allowed to purchase a brand new Annual Pass that expires 1 year from now, or am I only allowed to upgrade my current pass because it's not within 30 days of expiring?

As I recall you can only renew within 30 days of your expiration date. You might be better off with a block-out ticket. However, I would take the blockout ticket to the AP processing center and see IF you can renew/upgrade at the same time. Just be prepared for having to actually renew/upgrade next month when you are within your 30 day window.

If you 'bought' a new premium pass, you would lose anytime left on your old one. (and that's if they let you do it). I would go and ask at Guest Relations outside of the parks. (to the left of the disneyland entry gates - where you get special event tickets) and see what they say.

If you're buyng a new pass (not renewing) Disney will be happy to allow that and take your $$ at any time. As the PP stated, you would lose out on the remaining time on your current AP since during the overlap period you could only use one pass at a time (and they're not transferable to another person).

If you can hold out until 30 days before expiration, you can upgrade inside of 30 days and it counts as renewal, too. Check out the AP section of the website; it talks about this cool option! So not only do you renew, but you upgrade, and you get to use the upgrade for the 29+ days, and the renewal month and day stays the same. :)

Perhaps you could do the blockout pass, or upgrade to the next step up of so cal (unless you're at that next step already), for your next visit, but then just hold tight and do a whole bunch of visits inside 30 days from expiration, and do the renewal/upgrade then? :) (they say you have to do that AT the parks, by the way, not online or mail)
