Too risky, or would you do this?

I'm planning a family trip next June and we really want to stay at BW (we own at OKW). We need 2 studios and a 2 bedroom, so I'm worried about 7 months availability at BW. I'm considering renting points to secure 2 BW studios at 11 months and then use my own points to add a 2 bedroom at 7 months. Obviously if I can't get the 2BR at 7 months, then it's a problem. I feel like it's a good bet, but I could be wrong. Is this crazy talk?

In the meantime, I could reserve the entire stay at my home resort of OKW on points just in case I can't get the 2BR at BW at 7 months. If we can't get the 2BR at BW at 7 months, would there be any way I could sell the studios as confirmed reservations? Or no because I'm not the owner?

I would say the best way to accomplish this is to rent bw from an owner and have them book all the rooms you want including the 2 bedroom and then rent out your OKW points you would have used so it technically becomes an even exchange, just with a little more work. I think you could also put up a trade thread and maybe someone who has BW points would want to swap to get get access to a OKW cheap GV?

Yes I definitely thought about renting my OKW points to make up for it but most of the rental agencies pay only $14.5/pt but charge $20+/pt to rent which really adds up when you're talking about 300+ points for the stay.

I've sold my points thru Davids before, but I've never done a private transaction. It scares me a little. :P Is trading points easy??

Renting through an agency to me is pretty much the same thing risk wise you just don’t have to do as much work vs using the board here. I’ve never rented my points but I have extra points that I plan to rent on the board at the end of July once the DVC website gets updated. I prefer to be in control vs having another middleman.

I believe there are no dedicated 2 bedrooms so at 7 months you will still need to obtain a studio as part of your 2 bedroom.

Oooooh.................good point. I may just have to take my chances at 7 months and hope I can get it.

If you aren't the owner of the reservations, you would not be allowed to use the DIS R/T Board. Can't speak for other venues.

From the few experiences I’ve had renting several trips, it seems high demand availability has a better chance when going thru an owner privately. Brokers often don’t have inventory of points for the most popular resorts right at 11 months. So then you get put on a waitlist for Boardwalk points until more of those owners come to rent their points with the Broker. Some days may fill in the meantime.

Going directly thru a BW owner gives the best shot at home resort availability. To me it’s worth a slightly higher rental price for this advantage, so even if other rentals were going for $18, $20pp to make sure you get what you need at BW is still worth it. Depending on your timing and the rental market, possibly you might end up $2pp short between your 2 transactions. But not necessarily. Goodluck! Sounds like an awesome trip 😊

When I book family trips that need more than 1 unit (whether it be studios, one, two bedrooms or Grand Villas) I always book my home resort of OKW. If the family isn't happy with that, too bad, so sad, they are still at Disney.

You can’t sublease a point rental - you aren’t the owner of the reservation. You would need the owner to be ok with the sublease - they have to change all the names. You could get the rental agency to try and sublease it for you (if the owner is ok with it), but I think they charge a fee per point for that.

I agree with others here. I’d rent your points out either here or through an agency, then I’d rent from someone here since prices can be better here than an agency. I think it’s unlikely you will get what you want at 7 months and since you want all you group to be together, I would not take the chance…… Even if you rented to David’s and got $14.50 pp and then rented from someone here at 16-17 pp, you’d end up paying $2-$3 extra dollars per point. That $600-$1000 would be worth my peace of mind.

HaHa...this strategy has certainly occurred to me, Chuck! You can't beat the cost of OKW. We'll be doing a split stay so we'll probably be at OKW for part anyway. I just love the ease of walking to HS and Epcot from BWV (spoiled!). Thanks everyone for the input.

I would recommend looking into a transfer of points. Then you get control of the points and the reservations, and if you need to cancel, you still get use of those points for future reservations (as dictated by the UY of the points) and you can even bank them if you are within the right time period. We did this for a big family trip and it worked great when i had to move things around due to covid.

I know that when rent via a broker, you would not be allowed to sublet the reservations to new people.

Johny come lately here, but IMO, you best bet would be to find an owner will to rent when the 11 month window opens, then rent your points out yourself. I'm not sure if you can transfer the points into your account and retain the home resort window, that may be another option, a points transfer, but you would have to check with Disney first. Also once you do a transfer it is final so, it if would work in a lot of ways it is a better option, the points become yours and you control them..... Again, I don't not know if the keep the home resort though....

Good luck

Transferred points retain their home resort and UY, so yes, if OP received transferred BWV points they could be used to book BWV at 11 months.

If it helps, we've found it easier to rent dedicated 2BR at BCV and Studios at BWV. It doesn't put you at the same resort but you are within walking distance.

You’re essentially renting 3 studios at 7 months, and a 1 BR. (Lock off is a studio + 1 BR).
I’d say the chances of getting 3 studios at 7 months at BWV is very unlikely at most times of the year.

Book your home resort. If there is availability at 7 months, just change at that time.

Rent and rent out your points here, should be a wash or close to it.
