Too much for the kids to do?

Next year we are making kids second trip to WDW. I have DSis picking up autograph books for me tomorrow so each of the kids will be doing that but now today we were at my grandparents house and DD fell in love with my grandmothers Disney pin collection. I talked to DCousin (Disney lifer) and she feels that the kids would greatly enjoy pin trading. I just have concerns that giving the kids autograph books and pins/lanyards would be too much for them to carry (& I would end up carrying it) and too much for them to leave somewhere. What are opinions on this?

When we have gone, my girls each carry their things in a small backpack - really not much bigger than the autograph book and then they wear the lanyards. Well, one of my kids wears hers and the other always seemed to stuff it in her backpack. It didn't seem to be a problem.

MYCHILDREN ARE 9 AND 10 AND THEY WEAR THEIR FANNY PACKS. THEY PUT A PEN, AN AUTOGRAPH BOOK, A PANCHO AND A FEW TRADING PINS. THEIR LANYARDS ARE HEAVY FOR THEIR NECKS AS THEY ARE FULL. HOWEVER, THEY DO NOT WANT TO LOSE THEM. SO EACH NIGHT THEY LOOK AT THEIR PINS AND DECIDE WHAT THEY WANT TO TRADE THE NEXT DAY. THATS WHAT THEY PACK TO CARRY. SOMETIMES THE WILL PUT THEIR CAMERASIN THERE TOO. IT HAS WORKED FOR US. THEY WILL HAVE TO GO THROUGH BAG CHECKS IF THEY DO THIS. THAT IS REALLY NO BIG DEAL FOR US SINCE I HAVE TO GO ANYWAY.

You didn't say how old your kids are. We are not really into pin trading so that is not an issue, but we do have autograph books and squished pennies. ...and yes, I end up schlepping them around! I have a child that "would lose her head if it wasn't attached," so anytime I have ever had her carry anything she ends up losing it, and then is heartbroken. (and this includes backpacks and fanny packs!) So I just carry their things in my backpack and they dig it out when they need or want it. This year I bought penny books and autograph books off Ebay. The autograph books are spiral bound and came with a fat pen that is on a string, that I just attached to the spiral of the book. One less thing to look for!

Pin lanyards can become heavy and hot around a little ones' neck.

I like the idea of leaving the lanyard in the room and taking a fanny pack with a few pins to trade each day. Maybe let them wear the lanyard one day and see how it goes, but realize that they might not want to wear it a lot.

My DD8 LOVES to do all the different activities. In Epcot last year, she had her autograph book, her pin lanyard, her M&M container filled with quarters for the pressed penny machines and also her mask from the Kidcot Stations. She sometimes uses a fanny pack, but this year she found a small messenger style purse to wear instead. I think instead of using the lanyard we will attach the pins to the strap of the purse so it's one less thing around her neck. ALso, she has her own disposable camera.

She tries to do everything she can while at Disney, but she knows that whatever she wants to do, she has to carry her supplies because I won't.
