I have visited Disney several times, and have always booked our resevations myself, but this is the first I've heard of the vacation club point system. I am very nervous to try this, as a vacation of a lifetime for a family doesnt come around very often. How do I know when I do this, we wont get to the resort only to be turned away or something awful? It kind of seems too good to be true, as I have checked prices and they seem so far above the point system, you know the saying "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is?" it keeps going through my mind, certain restrictions to rent and other issues you dont have with plain old reservations, Any help???

Are you talking about buying into DVC or renting points from a member?

There's risk for a DVC member, too, renting their points out. If somebody in your party damaged the unit, the DVC member could be held responsible. You need to have trust between the two parties and it works both ways.

Read some of the sticky's on how it all works. Just remember, it's between you and a DVC Member (not Disney). It's a private transaction. I've rented in the past when we had extra people going on a trip and it worked out fine (I just made sure I found a Dis/DVC member with plenty of posts on this board - I even went back and read some of their past threads/posts).

If you are trying to plan a trip for a large group renting DVC points, that could get tricky. Any time we've had a large group going, somebody usually always has to cancel close to check-in! If a DVC member cancels a reservation at 30 days or less of check-in, their points go into a holding account. That means they can only make reservations 60 days or less out. Sometimes it's hard to find availability that late and they risk losing their points. So I would think most members would make reservations nonrefundable when it gets close to that timeframe. If you cancel the day of arrival, the points are lost.

Good luck.

I have been renting points since 04 and have not found a 100% way to assure someone they won't lose out. I think if you check the board and see who is renting and posting and the fact the board rents thousands of points weekley something must be ok. This has been going on for years, something to good and not good could not last this long. With that said you could find someone looking to cheat people, its a trust thing both ways.
