Too many rides that made me nauseous

I enjoyed our stay at the Portofino, enjoyed lunch at Mythos, loved spending time browsing the shop windows in WWoHP (such detail!), and loved riding the "old-fashioned" rides: Men in Black, The Mummy, and yes, even ET.

But the newer rides that jerk you around in your seat in front of screens - Forbidden Journey, Transformers, Spiderman, Simpsons - they just made me nauseous. They just weren't fun. Minions wasn't as bad as the other ones - but it was the first one I did that day, and it did make me a little nauseous. I cannot imagine riding these more than once. Mind you, we had the golden ticket - the unlimited resort express pass. But we didn't feel like riding any of these a second time.

And the water rides are more like soaking rides than water rides.

The future of rides seems to be these 4-D rides that combine movement with screens, but it's hard to enjoy them when they just make you nauseous. I really lament this because we would love to go back to the Portofino more frequently, but the parks are not a big attraction for us.

So true. And once you really embrace that, it's so awesome! I wear my wicking-fabric clothes, I wear flip flops, we dedicate a day or half day to ONLY those rides, and go for it. :)

As for the ill-making rides...were you careful to make sure you were nicely fed and watered before the rides? I know that for me and MY stomach, if I"m hungry, overly full, and/or dehydrated, I get a heck of a lot sicker than if I'm at a perfect level of stomach happiness. This is especially possible if I go on something first thing in the morning, between my coffee and my breakfast.

Yeah, same here. Was I always like this? or am I just getting old. :scared1:

I am planning a FL trip when the new WWOHP area opens up. So one or two days there, but that is it. Will also do Animal Kingdom, our favorite park, but maybe just do some other things in the area next trip.

Maybe just relax at the hotel for a change, what a concept! :rotfl2:

I wear sea bands and they help immensely. I can't handle even going on a merry-go-round normally. With the bands, I only have to avoid the ride that is like the tea cups. I did notice the same issue with the water rides - especially Bluto's Bildge Rats. We've done a lot of theme parks and a lot of different rides and with the exception of water parks, that's the wettest we've been by far. We've skipped that ride on the last several trips as a result. Our next trip has a lot of days though, so we're thinking of giving the water rides a try again- but having a change of clothes for everyone this time! (We did not have changes of clothes when we tried the water rides last time - and Bluto's got everything wet -including socks and underwear).

I heard taking this ginger medicine can help. Or even eating a ginger chew before or after you ride could help a lot! That's what I plan on doing since I'm not much of a medicine person

I took some anti-nausea meds before we left in the morning. First ride was the Forbidden Journey - I had no problems and absolutely LOVED it - fast forward to the end of the day when my DD wanted to ride it one more time before we left - I didn't think twice - meds had worn off -:sick:
If you are prone to motion sickness - this is not the place to throw caution (or your lunch) to the wind.

Yes, I was fed and watered; I think I'm just getting old, just like spima3.

Meclazine

sea bands

ginger medicine ... ginger chew

anti-nausea meds meds ...

I think my problem was that I wasn't prepared for motion sickness. Now that I know, I'll definitely be trying some of these suggestions for the next trip...

..or maybe just relax by the pool the entire time (now THAT would be my kind of vacation)

You should go to Disney instead. Let the rides lull you to sleep.. :)
Ha! :rotfl: Yes, I do like the Disney rides. Call me a wimp! But, I liked the relaxed atmosphere of the Portofino. Beautiful hotel and nice express pass and I didn't have to deal with MDE, or FP+ or planning things in advance. Let me repeat that, so nice not to plan in advance. Booked our hotel 3 weeks before, and had a great time.

We have a house rented with a pool and are doing the very same thing. Only 4 days touring and 3 staying at the house AK, US, IOA, and Legoland.

I have been in vestibular therapy for three months and was just given a prescription for valium so that I can do some of the Universal rides. Let's put it this way, I get dizzy and nauseous on Soarin' at Epcot....

I also suffer from motion sickness, but I can take a Bonine the night before and the morning of and it helps. I also am able to close my eyes during a "flying part" or "falling part" of the simulator rides and it stops the dizzy feeling. I read somewhere to not close your eyes but concentrate on something that is not moving, this does not work for me.

The wet rides! I hate the wet clothes feeling, so I wear a poncho and ride all three wet rides in a row. I might still get a little wet, but nothing like the soaking we got the first time riding them.

Ginger pills, I start them at least 24 hours before my vacation and take them every 6-8 hours, no problems; without them I am a mess!

I haven't been to Universal, but I get dizzy/ill on many of the WDW/DL rides that toss you around - roller coasters like Thunder Mountain and Space mountain are right up against my tolerance, but simulators like Star Tours, Indiana Jones, etc. push me over the edge. This really bothered me, as I love those rides and wished I wasn't queasy on them. I happened upon a technique that has enabled me to really enjoy them again.

The main thing is to try not to let the machine toss you around. I used to hang on to the lap belt, hoping that if I could prevent it from mashing me in the stomach I'd feel it less. Instead, I almost do the opposite now:

1) Plant your feet firmly on the floor (note: this will not work on rides like Soarin' unless you have really long legs). Spread your feet as far apart as you can while still having them firm and flat on the floor.

2) Try to put as much weight as possible on your feet. Sit as far forward as you can with the lap belt / bar still firmly in place.

3) There's always something to hold onto in front of you - some kind of bar or handles. GRAB IT and hold on tight - almost like you're trying to pull yourself out of your seat.

4) You're now in almost a "water skiing" position. Yes, the lap bar / seat belt is going to hold you down, but lots of your weight should now be on your feet and hands. This is going to help in two ways. For one, your torso / queasy middle is not going to get thrown around as much, since your feet and hands are absorbing some of the motion. Secondly, your feet and hands give your brain an "early warning system" as to when you're about to get moved. When your brain can "make sense" of the signals it's receiving, you get less queasy.

This technique isn't perfect - you can't really "stand up" because of the lap belt. However, I have found that it helps me on airplanes and motion rides, & I've gone from being somewhat nauseous to actually enjoying those rides.

You know....I'm an AP holder to both Universal and Disney, and I've never even thought about sea bands or anything for those rides! I feel like a dummy. Hah

I've noticed the 3D ones bother me more...like Star Tours, especially if I'm wearing glasses vs contacts under the 3D glasses. Even MuppetVision bothers me occasionally. I will have to say, Transformers is very gentle compared to Forbidden Journey.

The Simpsons made me nauseous until I realized that if I could watch the other ride vehicles bobbing around, I felt better. I didn't feel that way on the others you mentioned except for the quidditch scene in forbidden journey. I just closed my eyes there. What I didn't like about that one was how far backward I was tipped. I felt like I was going to fall. I didn't find the simulators at Disney to be nearly as dizzy-inducing, had no problems there really. But I did not go on Soarin because I don't like heights and the idea of flying does SO not appeal to me!
