Too Many Points?

I've posted a couple things on the boards about a BWV add on. My question is; how many points is too many. We have two kids (17 & 10) and we usually travel in the off season. However, as our son (10) gets older, we'll probably have to go at the busier times of year when he's out of school (as opposed to taking him out for a week).

How many points does everyone have? I have 250 at WLV. Would a 100 - 150 add on at BWV result in too much? (seriously!) We would love to go at least once a year and perhaps use the points for a cruise or some other trip.

We started with 220 points when both "kids" were grown. We love taking friends and family with us, so we quickly discovered it was not enough. We then purchased an additional 150 (same resort, same use year), and finally feel that 380 IS enough. Of course, I would certainly use more if I had them!

I think "too many" points can only be determined on a person by person basis. How often do you plan to vacation, what times of year, what size unit, etc - those are all questions you'd need to answer first.

I'm a single mother of 1 teen, living in FL 3 hours from wdw. I currently have 900 and have little doubt I'll add some points when BCV goes on sale. I'm not sure what my "too many" point is...but I'm not there yet. I may have to splurge and throw points away on the 7 day cruise from time to time, but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make, lol!

hi:we have 2 contracts at bwv, totalling 360 points. it sure gets eaten up fast going a couple of times a year. i'll just warn you now, once you stay in a 1br or larger unit, it will be hard to go back to a studio. ergo, the need to add on more points. the last 150 point add on was done for two reasons: bwv was selling out and son and dil wanted a 1br unit for their honeymoon. the add on is supposed to help take care of all these little incidentals with people wanting to go to wdw.

We started with 150, which I was grateful to have, but now have 300 which I feel is not enough. As a previous poster pointed out, staying in the larger units really eats up the points, but there are times when it's simply necessary.

Oh, if your going to be one of those folks the poll indicates has purchased over 1500, I might offer a little humble advice. I think large purchases retain their value more if bought in separate groups. If you ever needed to sell, if the 1500 was all one contract, the market of available purchasers would be fewer, thus you would have to sell at a lower point value. You would probably be able to sell three 500 point contracts it for higher combined value than the large 1500 point contract.

I just thought I'd better share this view quickly, given all the pending huge 1500 point contract sales that are probably just about to happen .......

I guess that is another wonderful advantage of the point system, being able to add on.

We have 300 BWV points............enough to assure a 1-bedroom for a week at peak time. Our assumption is that we will only visit Orlando once a year. We have used the points outside of WDW but clearly they offer less value in trade compared to their use at BW.

We just got back from WDW. Stayed in VWL - wonderful. We took the DVC tour and are trying to decide when to buy and how many points.

For the next 5 to 7 years we could manage with 150 to 200 points to cover our off season trips in a studio. After that, with the kids bigger and in school and the wife back at work we will need a larger unit during prime times - and more points!

One option is to buy 150 now and add on in the future. What has been people's experience with add ons. If you currently own BWV and want to do an add on can you get more BWV points even though DVC is only selling VWL? If you can, how hard is it to get?

Another option is to just buy 350 points now, knowing that we will use them in the future, and rent out whatever we won't use over the next several years. Has anyone ever done this? Have you ever been stuck holding points that have expired?

We'd appreciate any thoughts.

My take on it is that getting add-on points at amounts less than 150 points at sold out resort is very tenuous and may be close to impossible. There are some success stories. If your add-on will be 150 pts or more, you can have success on the resale market, since purchasers do sell their entire contract for whatever reasons.

I think 2 contracts is a good option. You can buy points at any DVC resorts from resale companys, but only VWL and Vero and HH are available from Disney at this time. One way to look at it is that you currently have 40 years to use DVC. If you wait to get the additional points, you might have a much higher per point cost. We first looked into DVC when the per point cost was $60.50 (i think). We purchased when it was 65.50, and now it is $72 with promises that BCV will be substantially more. I guess I would look for one Disney contract and maybe one resale contract that offers a good per point price now and enjoy the full benefits for as long as you can. Our only regret was that we didn't do it sooner. Also, you will not want to stay in a studio once you have stayed in a 1 or 2 bedroom. The amenities are just SO different. The in room laundry facilities and whirlpool tub alone make it an entirely different vacation.

The number of points is up to each persons WDW traveling habits. There are a few who are content with 150, but most members never have enough. We have 2 OKW contracts for a total of 400 pts., and 100 HH pts., and with taking family and friends, it is no where near enough.

230 at Old Key West
80 at OKW
200 at Vero

It is not nearly enough but we live in Indiana and just can't get there for long weekends.

one thing to keep in mind that the most you can own in any one resort is 2000. Total maximum is 5000. I guess there could be ways around it such as putting in in a spouses name instead.
