DS 6 has to have his tonsils and adenoids removed on the 25th. Does anyone know how long this procedure lasts and did your child have to stay overnight? Thanks for any info.

Trish

My friend's DD had both out last year. The actual surgery only lasted about a 1/2 hour. That of course doesn't include pre/post op. Since the surgery was so early in the morning her DD could have gone home the same day if they could have gotten her to drink more. She was only 3 at the time so it was tough to convince her to drink when it hurt so much. She ended up staying overnight and my friend stayed with her. Since this wasn't forseen my friend didn't have a change of clothes or toothbrush. Luckily the nurses got her some scrubs and a toiletry kit. You may want to bring stuff just in case.

Hope your DS is better soon.

Tonsils will require an overnight stay and are much more invasive than just the adnoids. DS had adnoids and tubes this Dec and that was 15 minutes once surgery started. Very painless, was out snowmobiling on thurs, surgery was on tues. Seems to have cleared everything up.

Two of my four kids have had their tonsils and adnoids out, They wasn't going to keep them overnight .This was a hospital in Indianapolis but they have asthma so they had to watch their breathing and they stayed. I have seen alot of hospital let them go home, I would only let them get them out if they stayed overnight. Good luck!!!

Our neighbor's DD7 is having them both out right now as I type.

They were told they would go home today, the operation is just listed as out-patient.
NDD7 is suppose to have complete bed rest for 14 days.

PM me if you would like more details, and I'll ask specific's.

My DD12 has to have them out (as soon as school ends). I was told by her ENT that the proceedure would be day surgery and she will be home that day.

I'm concerned about the healing process? We will be going on vacation 2 weeks after her proceedure. Can anyone comment on how long this last?

My first ds was 4 when he had it done and it took more than two weeks to heal , he wasn't aloud to jump around so if your going to disney you might want to ask the dr about it . My other ds was not even 2 and he was in the hospital for a week and came home after that with his i.v. in his arm, we had to go back for three days to get fluids to keep him from dehydrating.

We will be back before the surgery takes place. How hard was it to keep your child from jumping all over the place? My DS is very active and hates to be still.

It wasn't hard at all, they did feel like it for awhile. , then you could see as they felt better ,they would start being themselves.

My DD had both tonsils/adenoids out when she was 9. They did not keep her overnight. She did feel quite miserable for about 3-4 days. They also like them to be "not active" for about 2 weeks. Apparently, it is easy to start bleeding until the area has time to scab over. So, we did it during the summer when she was out of school and she just could participate in any sports for about 2 weeks.

My DS just had his tonsils and adenoids removed in March. It was outpatient surgery, we got there at 6am and were leaving the surgical center at 10:30am. That included a 30-45 minutes pre-op, where they gave him a sedative to relax him and make him sleepy, and the one hour nap he took in recovery. As far as activity afterwards, he wasn't on complete bed rest, the doctor told us that he couldn't do anything real strenuous for two weeks, but that he would be able to go back to school 10 days after the surgery.

I work at an out patient surgery center and T&A's are very common procedures for those under 16. Older patients are usually done at the hospital although we have had a few done as out patients. Plan on at least two weeks of limited activity but kids seem to bounce back quickly. PD on it's way!!

This brings back memories. DS has his adenoid and tonsils removed at different times, but the tonsil were the worst. Our ENT warned us that thirst is the biggest problem and boy was he right. The poor kid kept trying different liquids, then different cups thinking that would help. The good news is he did great and was never plagued with sore throats again. His tonsillectomy was done in same day surgery with a "keep things mellow for a couple of days and liquids to start advance to very soft foods after 5 days". 14 days of bedrest sounds a little extreme to me even for an adult.
Good luck and prayers are with you.!

DS had them out at 3 1/2. best thing that we ever did for him. Never gets sick anymore and his asthma is all but gone. My DS still talks about "do you remember when the doctor took my cough out". Actually surgery is quick (1/2 hour or so).

They kept him one night because of his age. As an above posted said he was miserable for a few days and after that was fine. Was eating normal by about day 4 or 5 and pretty much himself after a week. We had arranged for him to stay with my mom during the day of the second week because i had to go back to work. He was bouncing off the walls wanted to go back to school!!

Hints:

No red jellos or drinks - they make it harder to tell if he is bleeding so doctor told us to avoid them.
jello is a wonderful thing - not as cold as ice cream plus counts as a fluid.

My 15 yo son had them out this past December. The surgery itself was only about 1/2 hour long, but all in all we were there for probably 4-5 hours. He was in quite a lot of pain for about a week, and he's usually a trooper about everything. He had to stay out of school for a week, and no physical activity for 2 weeks, no gym, sports etc. Best of luck to you.

Your insurance company most likely will have the final say on whether the procedure is a "day surgery" or if you have the opportunity to stay overnight.
