So I tipped him extra when we left. :goodvibes

Poor guy, someone set another tray on a stand right behind him and when he turned with ours both trays crashed to the floor. He was so embarrassed. He was an excellent waiter otherwise so I thought a little extra would help his feelings.

I've seen too many people pitch a fit when something like this happens. That's why they call them accidents.

Poor guy.

Nice of you to be so considerate.

Did the manager come over and offer you folks dessert on the house for your trouble?

A similar thing happened to me on my very first night waiting tables (about a million years ago!). I dropped a whole tray of food in front of all my tables. I was so upset that I had tears in my eyes. I guess they all felt bad for me, because I got amazing tips from every table that witnessed my clumbsiness

Nope, no free desert but we were too full anyway.

That was very thoughtful of you.. :goodvibes

There are a lot of very miserable people out there who would have thrown a royal fit instead..

That was awfully nice of you! I'm glad to hear things like this because there truely are some nice folks out there and accidents do happen.
Plus, you probably took a night that was horrible/embarrasing for him (we've all had them) and made it a little better.

:goodvibes Good for you!!! I was a server for many years and a little sympathy goes a long way. I used to laugh at the people that would throw a fit. I mean really, if the worst thing that happened to you all day was that you had to wait an extra 10 minutes for food because your poor server dropped it, consider it a great day! ;)

When I was pregnant, my whole family was at Olive Garden. Even my now FIL. (he was living with us after Hurricane Katrina took his house, so we, naturally, included him in any family outings.) My mom ordered a Peach Bellini and I was SOOOOO jealous because they're so good, but I was being a good pregnant woman and not having anything to drink. My husband (then boyfriend) was ragging on me and constantly reminding me how much I love that drink and how it's so good and that I used to be able to get 2 of them and everything else. Typical of Joe. Our waiter or waitress came back with our drinks and when she went to hand my mom her drink, the glass slipped out of her hand and spilled all over Joe. I'm talking his shirt, jeans and shoes. It was the best thing ever. I told the server I'd give them an even bigger tip if they'd 'accidentally' spill it down his other side, just so he'd smell like a lush =) so, he had to sit through the rest of dinner smelling like (what I always say) a fruity, frozen, girly drink. Now, when we go to Olive Garden, he won't sit on the end. He always wants me to sit on the end.
We never once gave our servers any grief if they dropped something. You're human. Accidents happen. Life goes on. I can't remember all the times I witnessed guests getting their panties in a twist because their server had a mishap. My thought was that they needed to maybe get some booty and get a good nights rest.

We took our DD to The Melting Pot for her birthday and our waitress was great. She was friendly to our DD and very helpful. It came time to serve the chocolate fondue at the end of the meal, and she tried to balance the tray on top of the extra chair at our table and it slipped and we had chocolate all over. It was all over the chair, on my DD and the floor. I felt so bad for her that we also tipped her extra. She was so upset, she was trying to get chocolate out of the chair and apologizing at the sametime.

Last time we were there we had a similar experience.
When she went to put my plate in front of me, she stumbled or something and dumped it all over her feet. DH's made it just fine so we shared (we get the same thing) and between that and the salad/breadsticks it was fine!
She had another order made to-go for me. She actually threw some desert in our to-go bag with the meal, so that was nice and unexpected!
