Tonga Toast

It is a very thick slab of sourdough bread which is stuffed with banana, deepfried and rolled in cinnamon sugar. Although it is served with syrup, I recommend passiing on that!!!

You can find it at Kona Cafe at the Polynesian or Polynesian room service.

Am I remembering correctly that you can request this at the Ohana Character Breakfast too?
I am planning on doing the Ohana breakfast on our last morning - and I would REALLY like to try the Tonga Toast!

also curious if this is part of the ohana character breakfast...

It is not part of the menu at 'Ohana.

I don't know if you could pay extra and get an order of Tonga Toast from Kona's kitchen. I suspect the two may share a kitchen or at least be adjacent.

Personally, I would just make a seperate trip to Kona! :thumbsup2

What is this and where do I find it? :confused3

It is also on the menus at:

Rainforest Cafe:

Tonga Toast - cinnamon French toast with warm maple syrup topped with fresh strawberries, bananas and walnuts, served with your choice of bacon or sausage $8.99 :goodvibes

Oh my........that sounds wonderful! :) can you order it w/ a scoop of icecream???

Although I haven't tried the TT at RFC, my hunch is that it is not the same as the TT at Kona. It may be good, but I think the Kona recipe is exclusive.:earsboy:

Does anyone happen to have a picture that actually shows it stuffed with the banana? I'm really looking forward to trying this for the first time in July.

Not cut open, but a pic nonetheless :)

My dear 80-yr-old mother who eats very sparingly at most meals absolutely INHALED her Tonga Toast THREE mornings in a row! I've never seen her so delighted by food in a very long time!

You know.... if anyone wants it I have the recipe for Tonga Toast!! While at WDW in April I bought the cooking with Mickey cookbook and it was in there.

Yup - make it at home all the time...

Tonga Toast

2 or 4 slices sourdough bread, cut 1 to 1 1/2 inches thick
1 banana
1/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 egg
1/4 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
oil or shortening for frying
whipped butter and/or syrup

Cut a 1-inch pocket in one side of each bread slice. Cut banana in half crosswise, then split each piece lengthwise. Remove peel and stuff two pieces of fruit in each pocket of bread; set aside. Mix sugar and cinnamon; set aside. Mix together well the egg, milk and vanilla.

Heat about 4 inches of oil in a pan to 350º F. Dip stuffed bread into egg/milk mixture and let it soak a few seconds to let penetrate bread. Fry bread on both sides in hot oil until lightly browned, about 3 minutes.
Drain on paper towels or wire rack. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and serve.

Thanks for the recipe! My wife is out right now buying the ingredients for my Birthday Breakfast on Saturday. Now how about that picture of the Tonga Toast cut in half? Anyone? :)

Have we mentioned its sweet. And deep fried. If the clogged arteries don't get you, the sugar coma will. It is good - but I find a few bites to be sufficient - one per family!

Someone did post a picture of one cut in half it was within the last two months. I tried searching but can't find it. Maybe you will have better luck. But it does just look like bananas with some sort of filling.
