Tonga Toast Worth the Trip to Kona?

We thought it was definitely worth a trip to Capt Cook's on the QSDP!!!

If you like deep fried, sugary things you will enjoy the Tonga Toast. Personally, it is too heavy for me. My solution is to order it grilled instead of fried. It is much lighter (although it is still huge and very filling) and much less sugary as the cinnamon sugar does not stick as well when it is grilled. I absolutely love it grilled while there are many who prefer it in its original form.

As the previous poster said, if you want to try the Tonga Toast but save a little money, head to Captain Cook's at the Poly instead. It's the quick serve location so the food is less expensive but it's the same Tonga Toast they serve upstairs at Kona.

You may not can get it grilled at Capt Cook's, especially since they added the automated ordering kiosks. I don't remember that special requests were handled there. But they must have a way, since so many guests have special needs with their food.

The tonga toast at the counter service does not come with strawberry sauce (just regular syrup)

But if someone in your party wants to order the Mickey Waffle that comes with the berry sauce...! :thumbsup2

... Also, those Macadamia Nut Pancakes are almost as good!

Still waiting for Capt Cooks to start offering those! ;)

We wanted to introduce the family to Tonga Toast during our May 2008 trip, but didn't want to have a long sit-down and expensive meal with a few picky eaters with us. We also went to Captain Cooks and ordered it there...DH and I split it knowing it was so filling...and it worked out GREAT. So I say if you want to try it, go the Capt Cooks route instead to save a little money!
:thumbsup2

I'm surprised noone has posted a picture of one. I'm curious to see what it looks like :surfweb:

We leave in a week and are staying at Poly and I purposely made a breakfast ressie at Kona to try this and the pancakes lol Not to mention the kona coffee. Will let everyone know what I think when I get back.

This was from our Oct. 2008 trip and meal at Kona Cafe...but it was yummy. The portions at Capt. Cook are still pretty big.

I'll be the third person to say yes to Kona for breakfast because of the pineapple-macadamia nut pancakes! I have a sweet tooth but the first time I saw tonga toast I was positive that I would not like it. But those pancakes were yummy! When we return in December I'll be ordering them again.

Tonga toast is easily the best breakfast there is anywhere in Disney!!:thumbsup2

Just an FYI, each slice soaks up 12 ounces of fryer grease. That's a cup and a half of Canola oil!!! I used to work there and we weighed them before and after frying just to see how much it absorbed. Needless to say, I've never eaten one! :scared1:

We went to Kona on our most recent trip to try the Tonga Toast and the Big Kahuna. DH and I both thought the Tonga Toast was just ok. However, the Macadamia Nut Pancakes on the Big Kahuna platter were really really awesome, as were the scrambled eggs. I'd go back just to order the pancakes! And the press pot coffee was really good, too.

We have the review from our Kona breakfast posted - it's in the thread I have linked in my signature, if anybody is interested. :)

I know it's worth it! We made a last minute ADR at Kona's for our departure day. DH wasn't sure why we were driving to the Poly for breakfast when we could have had it at ASMu. I had the Tonga and he had the Big Kahuna with the pressed pot of coffee. OMG it was devine! He loved it and we will be going back next year!:wizard:

If time and cost is a factor, get it at Cap'n Cooks and enjoy it out by the Volcano pool. I have ordered it at both Kona and CC, and while Kona is lovely when looking at the lobby etc., somehow breakfast by the pool, looking over the beach made the Tonga Toast that much better.;)We will be at CR for a few nights this Christmas, and I believe I will hop on over by monorail and do exactly that one morning!

Good thing there are no fat or calories in WDW!:rotfl2:

Here's a controversial one: I'd say going to Kona for TT is more worth it than going to Le Cel for steak! Not that TT is the best breakfast I've ever had in my life but I say that as a comparison because you can get steaks in so many places at WDW but really Kona (the Poly) is only place for tonga toast.

We had the Tonga toast 2 times last year and will be going at least once this year to Capt'n Cooks. :cool1::hippie:

I tried TT for the first time in August and although I liked it, I didn't love it as much as I had thought I would from reading this board.

The french toast they used to have at Boatwright's was much better!

I am too much of a French toast purist - I didn't enjoy the tonga toast as much as I hoped based on all the reviews here. The cinammon-sugar is overpowering, the outside is crunchy (deep friend, after all) and the bread isn't "French toast" flavored so much. Just ok, IMHO.

However, the press pot coffee is great and the pancakes and regular French toast are fabulous. We will definitely go back but we'll get those things instead of tonga toast and splitting a Big Kahuna (which is practically a breakfast buffet by itself!)

How do people feel about the taste of the Puffy French toast at Crystal Palace. ME and DW thought it was really good. Another place we will be trying again in October. :cool1::hippie:
