:teeth: Just like the title says...I'm wondering what tonga toast is....I've heard SO much about it...and even see some pics (Looks great)...But if someone would be so kind to let me know just what is Tonga Toast? :teeth:

I had it at the Kona Cafe during last year's trip. It was basically what seemed like about 1/2 loaf of bread with bananas stuffed in the middle, coated with an egg mixture and deep-fryed, then coated with cinnamon sugar. I thought it was very similar to the "butter toast" you sometimes see on the menus of Chinese boba tea/snack shops.

I thought it was the sort of thing that is absolutely dreamy the first few bites I took of it, but the sheer volume of sugar/carbs/fat eventually wore on me to the point of food coma. I think it would probably be best if split with 2 (or more) people--I couldn't finish it, and I can eat an almost unlimited quantity of food...

I agree.... :rotfl2:

I don't know the calorie content but it has to be the equivelent of 3 big mac's. I have seen it but never ate it, there is just not enough walking to work that off as it is an equal amount of fat, carbs and sugar.

I'm sure there is a picture of it on the restaurant photos post if you want to see it. A lot of people love it and has been on the menu for years -- very popular.

It is delicious, but it can't be consumed by one alone! I'm ordering it this Tuesday along with some fresh fruit to balance out the bad. I'm also going to share it with my DH, DS, mom and dad. A few little bites each along with some fruit is a good way to start the day! :earsboy:

Very sweet. If you have a sweet tooth and like bananas and fried food (the toast is deep fried) its really good. It is probably too much for any one person, we do one order and split it. I also go into a sugar coma about a quarter of the way through. I like to balance it with protein though. DH will order an omlette.

Ick, I thought it was SO GROSS. Greasy, fatty, super sweet. Like a big donut smushed with mushed up banana's. I was warned by another person meeting us that it was overly sweet and hard to stomach, so I chose something else but DH went on and got it since he LOVES sweet things. Needless to say, he had a hard time stomaching it all and the few bites I had were icky.

If you really really really really like really really really sweet and fatty things, you would enjoy it. Otherwise, I'd split it between several people as a side or something.

Gosh - I'm not sure what this says about me, having read your posts, but I loved the Tonga Toast I had.

I did order the fruit as well to try and have something healthful in the meal ;)

Anyone know if this could be ordered other than on morning hours????

Thanks everyone...I don't think DH would go for it now that I've found out what's inside :rolleyes2 he's against Banana's totally. I wonder if you can order it without bananas inside? Anyone ever try? The phots look sooo good...but I also don't think I would like the banana's inside....I'm funny that way...I really don't like my fruit mixed in stuff like that...I like it fresh :goodvibes But again thanks for letting me know what it is.

Then you could order french toast with cinnamon sugar. It's the bananas and the deep frying that make it different.

it sounded so good that I had to find a recipe as I don't want to wait 'til I am there in august so here you all go:

Recipe
Tonga Toast

Ingredients:

2 or 4 slices sourdough bread, cut 1 to 1 1/2 inches thick
1 banana
1/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 egg
1/4 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
oil or shortening for frying
whipped butter and/or syrup

Method:

Cut a 1-inch pocket in one side of each bread slice. Cut banana in half crosswise, then split each piece lengthwise. Remove peel and stuff two pieces of fruit in each pocket of bread; set aside. Mix sugar and cinnamon; set aside. Mix together well the egg, milk and vanilla.

Heat about 4 inches of oil in a pan to 350º F. Dip stuffed bread into egg/milk mixture and let it soak a few seconds to let penetrate bread. Fry bread on both sides in hot oil until lightly browned, about 3 minutes. Drain on paper towels or wire rack. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and serve.

I absolutley, totally agree!! It is *delicious* for the first few bites, but then it got too sickly for me. Next time I think we will get one between the five of us and each just have a little piece each! :flower:

I might just have to make tonga toast for breakfast for everyone tomorrow. Thanks for the tips.

Frances999, I love that picture of the Poly beach! Wish I was there now!

Oh and the Tonga Toast in one word delicious! And I eat it with bacon!

I realize this might gross people out even further, but does anyone know if they serve coconut syrup in addition to Maple, etc at the Kona Cafe???

I just plain love the stuff.... :flower:
