Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover - refurbishment postponed

The People Mover does NOT need changed. My hope is that the downtime is for routine maintenance only. On my last visit, I noticed that a number of the cars were unavailable. The operator would place an orange traffic cone in these cars to designate them as such. It appeared that these cars had excessive tears in the seat cushions. Even one of the cars that I sat in had a pretty big gouge in the seat, but evidently, it wasn’t deemed “bad enough” to be taken off line.

I actually do miss the previous “voice” of the people mover – the cheesy robot (not sure if he even had a name). I miss the “Tom Morrow” joke that was told as you were about to enter Buzz Lightyear. The current voice mentions Tom Morrow while inside Space Mountain, but it’s not the same premise.

I didn't notice that the Tom Morrow joke was gone. Did they add that to Spaceship Earth in the space after the ride where you can send your "future" to your email account?

I also agree in regards to routine rehab...the cars were not working properly with similar ones blocked off when I was there in December.

In 2009, the cheesy robot narrator (whom I came to adore) was replaced for a more subdued female voice. I believe the Robot narrated the ride from 1994 - 2009. The "Paging Mr. Morrow" line was completely removed when the narration was redone in 2009. The old robot narrator would chime in right when passing by Carousel of Progress and just before entering Buzz Lightyear with his most famous punch line: "Paging Mr. Morrow, Mr. Tom Morrow - Your party from Saturn has arrived, would you please give them a ring?"

It is my understanding that so many people spoke out against the change, that Disney made a feeble effort to re-introduce it in 2010. The new narrator now says something to the effect of "Paging Mr. Morrow, Mr. Tom Morrow. Please contact Mr. Johnson in the control tower to confirm your flight to the moon". It feels like an afterthought becasue it WAS an afterthought. I guess that's progress in the "city of progress", right?

:rolleyes1

Wow great detail and now that you put it like this you are totally right. I remember the old verbiage now that you mention it. I like the old version better as well. Interesting stuff.

I'm glad that someone found my "useless knowledge" to be helpful :)

I should also mention that the new/current "Mr. Morrow" happens inside of Space Mountain rather than at the old location.

Oh no. No no no no no. :sad2:

Sweetheart. :flower3::flower3::flower3::flower3:

The people mover is a hidden gem. It isn't out there to "impress" anyone. It isn't out there to "wow" you with the latest and greatest technology. It doesn't NEED any new gadgets, or themes, or gizmos. It is pure awesomness because it is "Old school". It is THE PERFECT ride when you just need a break from all the "GO GO GO GO WOW " of the parks. It is 10 minutes of bliss and relaxation. It is a gorgeous view of the castle, of tomorrow land, and a chance to feel the wonderful florida breeze. Seriously people... don't #$^@ with the people mover.

:thumbsup2 Couldn't agree more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Couldn't have said it better myself! People mover is a classic ride and great when you just want to relax for a few. My kids (ages 8,6,4,4) all love it and want to ride it multiple times in a row usually

They will never get rid of the people mover. That space isn't used and they can't replace it with a bigger/better attraction. Not to mention it is a classic.

well they did get rid of the people mover in Disneyland so never say never. But I agree it is a classic. What they could do if they wanted to is improve the technology add new things along the track or something like that. One thing I do think it does need is a refurb, a painting job and some car repairs.

Wait, I just realized I am going over labor day week. Maybe I missed it but, has anyone heard when they plan on taking this and other attractions for refurbishment?

Quite true. I think though with DL it is all about space there. They don't have anywhere to grow where at WDW they have space. They would need to take out both the PM and the Astro Orbiter though if they were to even attempt to really do much with that space. Nevertheless, it shouldn't be removed so we shall not speak of it! :)

and the thing with Disneyland also is the people mover track is still sitting there they haven't done anything with it.

I was informed that the TTA would be down during the referb of Astro Orbitor due to the extent of the referb. They originally said they would be changing the ride system to accommodate wheelchairs and that the ride needed to be completely torn down and rebuilt so that the ride system would start and stop in the same place every time to make it possible to load a wheel chair. This is all second hand info from someone in the Disney TA office so take it all with a grain of salt.

Well I could see disney adding wheel chair accessibility but I don't see them tearing down the whole ride and rebuilding it.

The people mover at DL was replaced by he rocket rods which closed about 3 years later. They had constant, I mean CONSTANT maintenance problems and was always down. I wished they would just slap the people mover back in.

Probably why they won't take it out at WDW, since the DL ride was a bust.

Well said! This ride is a family favorite

It's not 1972 land it's tomorrrow land..I've been to Wdw many times and this ride is dated....some times MK feels like a museum rather then an amusement park. The TTA needs to be plussed ..yes I also like to sit and take a nap on it..but I rather be wowed by a ride then take a nap on it.

so what your saying is they should level and redo tomorrow land? Good luck with that, I'm pretty sure outrage would happen. Walt wanted the people mover technology to be the new way to transport people it didn't happen that way but I don't see them getting rid of it any time soon. I love tomorrow land because it's that future that was thought to happen in 1972. Everyone thought we would have our own robots and flying cars. Do you have any of these? The only thing I think should go goodbye in tomorrow land is stitch I mean is that even a ride I rode it once and was like really who created this.

Happy to hear people mover is open for our trip. always wished there was a way to take our daughter on from her wheel chair, i can carry her but the way down is a little to risky.

Well said!!! I LOVE the TTA and would be very upset if they got rid of it! It brings nostalgia and a restful time to cool off and talk with the family. We ride it several times during our trip. I agree about Stitch too, probably the worst ride at WDW IMHO.
