Given my recent, near fatal, 'scrape' with E Bay I'm now on the hunt for the best Tom Tom for us :thumbsup2

Looking at online shops - PC World, Comet etc - I've come up with about £260 for a 500 and £310 for a 700.

European mapping will be useful as we will use it in Italy but do I need the detailed street mapping that comes with the 700 or just the main streets that come with the 500? :confused3

Any help or advice would be much appreciated :goodvibes

Thanks :cloud9:

Alison ~ I have the Tom Tom 700 and find it really useful and easy to use. I've only used it in the UK though, so cannot comment on the use of it abroad.

Pretty certain I can avoid a ditch, even without a sat nav but.....

Amazon don't appear too great on the Sat Nav front.

Done a 'Kelkoo' price check search which has provided me with the cost.
Just need to figure out what I actually 'need' now :thumbsup2

Basically, a unit which allows myself (who has never, ever been able to map read) to negotiate with DH (who, until his brain tumour 'robbed' him of his cognitive abilities to map read................) and stop DD shouting at DH, shouting at me............................. :rotfl:

We're off to Italy in July but uncertain whether we'll ever need the unit for European travel again so how far do we need to go?

:grouphug:

Hiya Allison, although I dont know much information about the Tom Tom sat navs, I would suggest buying a model with a sensor built in to detect speed cameras, for example, you can get a product called the "Road Angel" what detects and bleeps when you get close to cameras/black spots, alot of Sat Navs now have this built in I would advise anyone to invest in one with this feature.

Good Luck =)

Have to admit that this might be a good idea as I am pretty bad at keeping to speed limits..........................- even a mile or two outside the limit

In 5 years of passing my test I have been mindful enough to avoid a ticket but..................................... :confused3

do you have a nokia symbian model phone, if so you could just buy the software and a 45 quid bluetooth gps receiver. i have tomtom mobile on my old nokia 6600, and it does pretty much the same as the tomtom5 that im currently using in orlando.

You can get a speed camera "Point of Interest" database for Tom Tom you can add. It use to be free but now the web site charges a couple of quid.

http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/

I don't know much about the Tom Tom units, my version runs on my phone, but you probably want one that you can add the Orlando or Florida maps to it.

Good hunting

I have a Nokia 6230i, and a Bluetooth receiver (which I don't have a clue how to use, and doesn't know it's way out of the box .... ) :confused3

im not well up on the specific models, you should check on the nokia site to see if the 6230i is a symbian model. as you already have the gps reciever, if your phone is a symbian, you can either buy tomtom mobile pre-installed on a memory card from ebay, or get yourself a 256mb memory card and send me a pm.

Thanks Tron.

It does seem to be a 'Symbian' model but I'm beginning to get seriously confused now............... :lmao:

Given my recent 'scamming' incident on E Bay I've gone down the road of PC World and the Tom Tom 700 :thumbsup2
DH will need to use the system as well occasionally and no way am I leaving him in charge of my phone......... ;)

Depending on the cost of the memory cards that could be a 'back up' option :sunny:

i got a 256mb mmc card for my old nokia 6600 for 11 quid delivered on a buy it now. as you already have a bluetooth gps receiver, thats all you would be needing to buy.....cant figure out why you would have the gps reveiver if your not using it on a satnav device though ???

Afraid my phone's just used to text mainly - never gave it a thought that you could do anything else but call, text and take pics with it

slap me if im wrong, but your not getting a bluetooth headset mixed up with a bluetooth gps receiver are you ? if you are, its another 45 quid to pay.

Got a phone which, now I've looked, says it's a Symbian model and a bluetooth headset too :sunny:

Also got my TomTom which arrived yesterday so busy playing and working out how you buy off E Bay to convert the phone - keeps me out of mischief..

well it looks like you also need a bluetpoth gps receiver for your phone then (thats not the same as a bluetooth headset). when i get back i'll point you in the direction on ebay of exactly what you need to buy, and the sellers i bought from, so you wont get ripped off.
