I just caught wind of this - Disney released a statement about 10 minutes ago:

http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20160404006630/en/

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Thomas O. Staggs will leave his current position as Chief Operating Officer of The Walt Disney Company, effective May 6, 2016. He will remain employed by the Company in the role of special advisor to the Chief Executive Officer, Robert A. Iger, through this fiscal year.

I feel a great disturbance in the Force...

whenever you get reassigned to a role with the world "special" in it ... it's just a pit stop to being gone

I bet Pete is upset they aren't on the air this week to comment on it

Wow. Shanghai Disneyland must be more of a mess than we've even thought if the guy who was supposed to be heir apparent to Iger is now on the way out.

Now I'm very upset that there's no podcast this week! This deserves a special video message from Pete from California... :-)

This was pretty much my first thought when I saw the news (well, second thought ... I don't really follow internal company news, so my first thought was shock). I'm sure we'll hear quite a bit about it next week (at least I hope we will ... I'm really interested to hear the team's opinions on this news).

I'm wondering if Pete brought his personal recording system that he's done his solo show from and do a last minute one to discuss

Wow. This seems to be out of left field, though I'm sure internally maybe not.

Who was the other guy that basically was duking it out with Staggs for the CEO position? Looks like he may be back in the fold?

Jay Rasulo. It would be a highly unusual move to bring him back though.

I posted the same thought in the rumors & news board I'll post here...

I believe Iger ends up staying on even longer now.

My initial guess was Shanghai but I'm not so sure about that. I mean opening day tix sold out within hours, and last I heard, Tom wasn't necessary riding herd on that like Bob was. Tom is/was in a high enough position that he would not take the immediate blame for a mess with Shanghai unless it was really screwed up, especially before it even opens. My guess is there's something else going on. This quote from the NYT interested me greatly.

Disney said Mr. Staggs would step down as its chief operating officer early next month. Over the last year, as Mr. Staggs came under intense scrutiny by Disney’s board, it became clear that at least some board members were not convinced that Mr. Staggs, 55, had the skills required to maintain Disney’s creative momentum. Mr. Staggs and Disney mutually decided to part ways.

Perhaps he has made some enemies within the company, but my guess is something larger is at play. One thing's for sure: Iger ain't going anywhere anytime soon. That or when he came to the conclusion he wouldn't be CEO, he decided to seek out opportunities elsewhere. Either way, who wants to get in early on my bet that his replacement will have the first name of Bob?

Very odd. Wonder what's going on.

Pete, PLEASE do a solo show this week!

And here's a quote from Variety. Very interesting.

A source said Staggs, 55, made the decision to leave after pressing for a formal commitment from the Disney board about his future ascent to the throne. When that didn’t come, the executive came to the decision that he did not want to wait another two years and that it was time to move on. There was also speculation that delays and cost overruns with the long-awaited Shanghai Disneyland park, now scheduled to open in June, played a part. He had shepherded the $5.5 billion project during his previous tenure as head of the Parks and Resorts division before his promotion to COO in February 2015. However, sources cautioned that many of those issues were spurred by the complexities of doing buisness in China.

He wasn't going to be CEO that's what. There are a few people on the board who don't like him apparently. It's been said they will go outside the company for the next CEO.

It's an open field....

Yeah -that Special Advisor role is never a good one. Basically, it means we need you on call in case the guy replacing you has any questions.
