Is there a Disney Movie that I can rent of Tom Sawyer that kind of goes along with the theme of the island? Or even a book. Thanks.

Is it bad that what I remember of Tom Sawyer is Huck Finn and the fence and remember nothing about an island?

Honestly, I don't know why Disney hasn't re-themed the island to more updated characters. What kid today knows Huck Finn, Tom Sawyer, or Davy Crocket?? Other than reading the classic Twain novels, I'm not sure how to introduce your kids to the characters. I remember feeling so sorry for two guys dressed as Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer when we were there a few years back. They were standing totally alone talking to each other and not one kid was approaching them for a picture or autograph. We asked our kids (who were 3 & 5 at the time, a little young for the novels!!) if they wanted to visit with them, and they looked really puzzled and said, "With those two dirty boys?"

There is the movie Tom and Huck that came out in '95 with Jonathan Taylor Thomas (one of the kids from Home Improvements) Not the best retelling of the story but good enought to get the point across and usually a well liked movie by kids. It's rated pg. There is also a cartoon "TOm Sawyer" movie that uses country music stars voices but may be harder to come by as it is not as mainstream. I have not seen it but IMDB has good reviews on it, it was released in 2000. Then there is also the classic books The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. I believe I read both in the third grade. They are both available on amazon plus I would bet that your local library has some version. The Davy crockett movies are also available for purchase on amazon, plus they are great disney classics..

I don't want them to update it. It is a classic story and should remain so. Just like Tarzans tree house. NO, it doesn't have the same feel as Swiss Family Tree house. I went to WDW last DEC., and it was so great to walk thru the tree house, and here that piped in music from the organ playing over and over. It is a classic, and while Tarzan is more recognizable, it special to the baby boomers. I loved that ride as a kid, and I still like climbing the stairs to see it again.
Tom Sawyers Island is just fun all around, well, at least I enjoyed it as a kid, and my kids enjoyed it, G-Kids too young yet, but there is just something great about the island, can't describe why, just love it all.

The Disneyland-Sing-along video shows the kids playing around at the Island. If you just want to show them what it looks like...

The 70's Disney movie of Tom Sawyer had Jodie Foster and the redheaded kid from Family Affair. I always loved it as a kid. I don't know if it's available to rent. The Disneyland Sing Along is now available on DVD. It shows TSI, but the scene is mostly of the fort, which is no longer open.

There have been many film versions of "Tom Sawyer." The two I remember are "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" w/ Tommy Kelly in the title role, and the musical version "Tom Sawyer" w/ Jodie Whitaker in the title role, which was also the version with Jodie Foster.

There have been even more versions of "Huck Finn." With the character of Tom Sawyer appearing in them, as well. The three I remember, though I don't remember if Tom Sawyer appears in all three, are "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" w/ Mickey Rooney in the title role, a remake with the same title w/ Eddie Hodges in the title role, and the musical version "Huckleberry Finn" w/ Jeff East in the title role.

But, as for Disney, besides "Tom and Huck" the only one I know about is "The Adventures of Huck Finn" w/ Elijah Wood in the title role. It also stars Courtney B. Vance as Jim, Robbie Coltrane as The Duke, Jason Robards as The King, Ron Perlman as Pap Finn, Dana Carvey as Widow Douglas, and Anne Heche as Mary Jane Wilkes. Just be aware that it is rated PG for a reason. The violence in it can be quite shocking at times.

Also be aware that these are film and television adaptations of the books, which means--even the Disney ones--are usually--only loosely based on the books. If one wants to prep oneself for a visit to Tom Sawyer's Island, one might be better to read the books upon which they are based. "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and/or "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer." Both by Mark Twain.

I've never been to the island. It sounds like a great place for the kids to roam free away from lines and crowds. At least that is my hope. I just wanted some kind of reference for them on the things they see. I have seen some of the movies you guys have mentioned and read parts of Tom Sawyer but cant remember an island.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a classic Mark Twain novel. There are various movies adapted from the novel through the years.
