Tom Sawyer Island scavenger hunt - "prize"

For those who have completed a hunt, I am assuming that you go along a short while beforehand (slip away from the rest of the party) and hide the prize. Is this right? We have one to do (courtesy of and grateful thanks to Mel) and I am trying to figure out exactly what to do.
